It’s a known fact that opposites attract. Grammy winner and piano maestro Chilly Gonzales and rock provocateur Peaches were coming from opposite ends of the spectrum when they first met in a basement jam session, but to hear them tell it, they found common ground in their willingness to cross over and give something new a try. Academy Award-nominated director Patrick Doyon brings their story to life in the debut episode of The Junction, a new animated series of short films from Red Bull Music Academy that sees Canada-based artists tell the funny and often unexpected stories of how they met and the music they created together.

The Junction coincides with the 18th edition of the world-traveling Red Bull Music Academy, taking place across Montreal in September and October (http://mtl.redbullmusicacademy.com). Alongside a robust program of concerts, club nights and public lectures, the series pays tribute to Canada’s strong history of innovative animation and the current explosion of talented young creators in Montreal. In making The Junction, Red Bull Music Academy partnered with Booooooom, one of Canada’s most renowned and wide-reaching online arts publications whose founder, Jeff Hamada, also serves as the creative director. Additional support comes from the National Film Board of Canada, which has been supporting local artists with a creative environment relatively free from commercial pressures since 1939.

Episode 2 of The Junction features Haitian-born, Montreal-bred beatsmith and the winner of the 2016 Polaris Music Prize Kaytranada in conversation with 2016 Academy participant River Tiber, and is slated for release on Tuesday, September 27.

Future episodes of the series will feature: Jessy Lanza, Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan, A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, BadBadNotGood, Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands, Lunice, Ango and 247esp.
