Anja Schneider’s ‘Soul Traveller’ EP is her first collaboration with producer and engineer Jan-Eric from Autotune. With another stellar year under her belt, Anja Schneider is hitting 2016 in inspired form. A new year means a fresh sound for the Berliner, who is diving deep into her record collection to draw inspiration from a variable palette of sounds from across the years.
“For this EP I really wanted to dig a lot deeper and produce tracks that reflected all my years collecting records; about two decades worth of music. This is different to ‘Dubmission’ and ‘Circle Culture’ – more mature. I hope you like it” – Anja Schneider
The accomplished three tracker kicks off with ‘Soul Traveler’ a rich jazzy tech house cut that shows off Schneider’s unmistakable talent and ear for a tune. Haunting and summery in equal measures, the vocal meanders along describing the life of America’s Black population in a less multi cultural time. ‘Bay Side’ is an analogue dream. Atmospheric and wonky, the 6/8 triplet feel sets this slice of an Tech Funk, an often forgotten sub genre, apart from much of the cookie cutter wannabe Detroit-esque broken beat fare around at the moment. This is the sort of track that the braver techno DJs might use mid set to change the rooms energy on warm up or warm down duties. Spellbinding stuff.
Deeply nuanced and again analogue-driven, ‘Vintage’ is a beautiful deep techno offering. Its by far the most ‘dance floor ready’ of the EP with an instantly likeable hypnotic quality. Underneath the brilliantly balanced subtle kick and percussion arrangement, melody patterns dance with careless abandon, where by the break ramps up the tension for a powerful second part.
Another faultless EP from one of the most consistent DJ/producers working today, and further proof, should you need it, of the world class label she runs and the talent that surrounds her. You can buy the release here.
