At this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event, the world-famous Rijksmuseum will open its gates for an unexpected musical authority: underground DJ Maceo Plex. Initiated by event promoter Audio Obscura, the artist and museum will be joining forces for a once-in-a-lifetime show on October 21st at a unique location: the iconic Bicycle Passage in the Rijksmuseum.

In recent years, Audio Obscura has become known for connecting classic locations and modern music. Setting up collaborations with well-known labels such as Ellum and Life & Death and having legendary artists Sven Väth and Joris Voorn play in the historic Royal Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, the Rijksmuseum makes for a perfect addition to this list and a great partner for a new exchange of creative energy.

Having taken his place in the booth for Audio Obscura a number of times already, a perfect musical match for the museum was found in Maceo Plex. Known for his enigmatic combinations of grooving, melancholic and ecstatic house and techno, the American DJ and producer visited the museum for some ground-level inspiration, listening to unique recordings from its collection of classical instruments.

Where bicycles cross under the Rijksmuseum during the day, for one evening only on October 21st, the Bicycle Passage will belong to dance enthusiasts. This is the first time the museum has collaborated on a project that revolves around electronic music, matching the museum’s vision to let visitors experience art in exciting new ways. Music is very important to the museum, not only because of the large collection of instruments housed in the building but also because music plays an important symbolical role in a large number of paintings exhibited.

Maceo Plex x Rijksmuseum will take place on Friday, the 21st of October from 7pm – 11pm. This event is free of charge. RSVP is possible by registering as a group of 2 to 4 people, which can be done here. The list will close on October 18th at 12am. The final attendees will be chosen and notified on the 19th at 4pm.
