Popular online electronic music music store Beatport has introduced an embeddable music player that will play across websites, blogs and social channels to stream songs from its service. The hook: artists and rights holders will be compensated for each play.
“Supporting artists has been a core value at Beatport since day one, and that mission remains as we expand to serving fans with our new streaming service,” said Beatport executive creative director Clark Warner in a statement. “Our embeddable streaming music player not only helps artists promote their music by making it available wherever their fans live online, but we are also taking the necessary steps to pay rights holders for each listen so artists get paid.”
The SFX Entertainment-owned company’s new service will offer direct competition with SoundCloud, which is widely used to promote new music across all platforms but does not monetize most of its streaming for artists and rights holders. And while Spotify offers an embed option, it requires an account to play.
News of Beatport’s plans for a streaming player was first announced in December last year. In March, the company launched a free streaming music app for mobile use.
Now every track on Beatport.com includes an embed code next to its purchase, social and heart icons. The player should stream on any website. It also will play within Twitter, though on Facebook it links users to its own website. SoundCloud will play natively within Facebook.
