Behind the Curtain: 5 Underground London Speakeasies You Won’t Find in Tourist Guides

London’s nightlife has many faces, from mega-clubs and rooftop cocktail temples to sweaty basements and tucked-away jazz lounges. But some of the city’s most compelling stories (and drinks) lie behind unmarked doors, password-only entryways, and back-of-house fridge doors.

We’re talking modern speakeasies, underground cocktail spots where the focus is on detail, atmosphere, and not shouting over the music. These aren’t bars you’ll stumble across unless you’re really paying attention. No Union Jack menus or flaming Mojitos here, just damn fine cocktails, vinyl nights, and a flicker of candlelight charm.

Here are five of our favourite London speakeasies that the tourists haven’t ruined (yet).

1. The Vault at Milroy’s – Soho

3 Greek St, Soho, W1D 4NX
Entrance through a bookcase at Milroy’s whisky shop

What’s the deal?
Downstairs from London’s oldest whisky shop lies The Vault, a candlelit hideaway where oak walls and jazz vinyl create the vibe of a post-heist whisky den. Milroy’s has been slinging rare bottles since 1964, but step through the bookshelf and you’ll find one of Soho’s best-kept secrets.

Try this: Smoke & Mirrors
A mezcal-forward twist on an Old Fashioned with lapsang tea syrup and chocolate bitters. It’s rich, smoky and perfect for whisky lovers venturing outside Scotland.

Why go?
It’s one of the few places in central London where you can have a conversation, sip something clever, and feel like you’ve slipped through time.

2. Discount Suit Company – Spitalfields

29A Wentworth St, E1 7TB
Look for the tailor’s sign and head down the narrow staircase

What’s the deal?
Housed beneath an old East End tailor’s shop, DSC is East London cool without the ego. The space is low-ceilinged, with just enough grit to feel real. Soul and Motown spins on vinyl complete the timewarp.

Try this: Hot Lips
A fiery mezcal cocktail with chipotle-infused agave, Aperol and fresh lime. It’s spicy, sharp, and will probably leave you ordering another.

Why go?
They’ve got that hard-to-nail balance of warmth, sharp drinks, and character. It’s also open late enough to be your after-hours hideout.

3. The Natural Philosopher – Hackney

489 Hackney Rd, E2 9ED
Enter through the Mac repair shop

What’s the deal?
Yes, it looks like a laptop repair shop, and it is. But behind the half-lit iMac displays and cables is The Natural Philosopher, an intimate, velvet-draped speakeasy with Victorian vibes and a botanical bent. A true East London gem.

Try this: The Philosopher’s Negroni
A savoury, herbaceous twist on the classic, infused with basil and pine. The balance is uncanny, bitter, fresh, and just complex enough.

Why go?
It feels like a cross between a gentleman’s study and a secret apothecary. Ideal for date night or hiding from your group chat.

4. Mezcalito – Chelsea (The Secret Basement Bar)

15a Elystan St, Chelsea, SW3 3NT
Ask the bartender to “take you downstairs”

What’s the deal?
Upstairs it’s all sleek Latin vibes, but if you know what to ask, you’ll be escorted to a hidden mezcal & tequila vault that looks like the setting of a modern Agatha Christie scene. Plush leather booths, low lighting, and more agave spirits than you can shake a salt rim at.

Try this: Jalisco Martini
A clever riff on the classic, made with reposado tequila, dry vermouth, and citrus oils, clean, bold, and sharp.

Why go?
The staff really know their stuff, the collection is huge, and the Chelsea location keeps the hype surprisingly low-key.

5. Nightjar – Shoreditch (The OG Speakeasy Vibe)

129 City Rd, EC1V 1JB
Look for the small door just off the roundabout

What’s the deal?
Nightjar isn’t just a bar, it’s a study in pre-Prohibition glamour, jazz-era aesthetic, and mixology wizardry. Though it’s garnered a fair bit of recognition, it still flies under the radar of most guidebooks thanks to its reservation-only system and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it door.

Try this: Opium Julep
A rich, boozy, medicinal number with Cognac, absinthe, saffron and opium poppy tincture (yes, really it’s legal). One of the most creative serves in the city.

Why go?
Live jazz, an encyclopaedic cocktail list, and a truly atmospheric setting. You won’t want to leave, and they won’t rush you.

Notable Mentions (Because Some Secrets Deserve Sharing)

You’ve got your main list, but London being London, the rabbit hole always goes deeper. These are the places you’ll hear about in hushed tones, often through a friend of a friend, or if you’re lucky, via a night out with our Decoded Editor

Mr Fogg’s Society of Exploration (Basement) – Soho

1A Bedford St (near Tottenham Court Rd station, off Dean Street)
A colonial-inspired bar tucked beneath Mr Fogg’s grander upstairs lounge. Think Victorian adventurer’s den meets time-travelling mixologist. Best paired with a stiff gin and some stolen glances.

Cache Cache – Covent Garden Piazza

Exact location: Ask nicely
Completely unmarked and hidden in plain sight, this opulent underground bar is all old-school glamour and candlelight chic. One of London’s worst-kept secrets (but in the best possible way).

Spy Bar at Raffles – The OWO, Whitehall

57 Whitehall, London SW1A 2BX
Set beneath Raffles London in the newly opened Old War Office, this bar delivers Cold War vibes with private booths, espionage-era interiors, and cocktails worthy of MI6 briefings.

42 – Mayfair

Location upon reservation only
An ultra-exclusive speakeasy that leans more Bond villain lair than basement dive. Expect immaculate serves, hushed conversation, and the kind of clientele who don’t need to post about it.

Cahoots – Soho

13 Kingly Court, W1B 5PW
Set in a disused underground tube station, Cahoots is a kitschy, fun throwback to Blitz-era London with a swinging soundtrack and cocktails served in thermoses and ration tins. Quirky, but surprisingly tasty.

Murder Inc. – Fitzrovia

36 Hanway Street, W1T 1UF
A moody, noir-inspired den from the Cocktail Trading Co. gang, dripping with mobster energy, blood-red lighting, and excellent agave-forward cocktails.

CINCO – Dalston

Dalston location — ask inside the taqueria
Hidden behind a wall in a taco joint, CINCO is part dive bar, part mezcal chapel. DJs, vinyl, and craft spirits make this a late-night essential for east London heads in the know.

If you know, you know. If you don’t — well, you do now.

The best bars don’t need lines, hashtags, or light-up menus. They just need a story, a well-poured drink, and the kind of lighting that makes everyone look about 17% more attractive. London’s hidden bar scene isn’t about exclusivity for its own sake, it’s about protecting the atmosphere. Respect the vibe, tip well, and maybe don’t post the entrance on TikTok, yeah?

The best thing about these places? You can’t stumble (literally) across them, you have to know about them. They offer an antidote to the formulaic bar scene, a little magic tucked behind curtains, bookcases, and neon signs that don’t work.
