The full back catalogues of Meta and Inkal, the esteemed imprints of Berlin house staple Ben Rau, until now available via vinyl only, will be made available for digital download in the coming months. This will occur on the 5th of July for Meta and the 2nd of August for Inkal.
“When I first started my labels Meta and Inkal, my goal was to deliver exceptional music via a vinyl format only. However the more I tour and meet with fans around the world, I’m asked again and again where they can get their hands on the music. These people are as passionate about the music as I am and so I’ve made the decision that, going forward, I’m going to begin making the music available to download. I’m also excited to announce that I’ll shortly be making the whole back catalogue of both labels available. I love vinyl and of course, I’ll continue to champion that format, but it feels like the right time to broaden the labels into the digital space too.” – Ben Rau
A name synonymous with the underground facets of electronic music, Ben Rau’s career in such a sphere has developed year on year since his earliest inception into Berlin’s raving circuit. After developing an internal love for the dancefloor, such a passion naturally progressed into a full-time profession, seeing him build a studio in his home-town of Berlin in 2011.
In 2016, Ben launched his first vinyl-only imprint, Inkal, to house his own bespoke releases. A steady stream of productions have come since its inception, a testament to Ben’s dedication and ability, before 2018 saw the establishment of his second vinyl label: Meta. This label houses the releases of other producers, whose sound and flair is in keeping with Ben’s sonic vision, and acts as an incubator to nurture and support their ever-growing careers.
It is in the last two years that Ben has truly cemented himself as one of the electronic music scenes most in-demand talents. After being invited by The Martinez Brothers to perform at their Cuttin Headz showcase at London’s iconic Tobacco Dock in October last year, the Berlin native has followed this up with tours of Australia and South America, whilst still continuing to produce and run each of his highly respected labels. The digitalisation of both of these imprints demonstrates Ben’s continued passion and willingness to give back to his fans.
“Over the years, Rau’s groove lead music… will be welcome additions to the record bags of lovers of stripped-back house.” – XLR8R
Meta’s back catalogue begins with UK native Rhymos stepping up to inaugurate the imprint in a reliably bass and groove-heavy style, with Ben Rau on remix duties. Label head and frontman Ben Rau is up next with the heavy Tech House grooves of the Marauder EP. Leeds newcomer Ray Mono provides a cosmically dazzling cut in the aptly titled First Contact EP before Manchester young gun Josh Baker serves up the no-nonsense minimal Swift Eviction collection.
Seba & Emile’s Vern’s Closet comes next with slinky, groove-laden basslines, then Chris Stussy and Toman, team up on the chart-topping four-track ‘Whatudo’ EP. Last but not least, French House veteran Okain drops the Throwback EP under his new alias House Of Kain.
