Darren Emerson has gone back to Dark & Long, the track he had a hand in as a member of Underworld, and rebuilt it for 2026.
The original earned its place through Trainspotting. It plays during Renton’s withdrawal, locked in his childhood bedroom, as Dawn appears on the ceiling and turns her head. The scene works because the music offers no comfort. Dark Train never builds towards release, it just keeps moving, a low rolling pulse beneath those distant, half formed voices. Boyle used it as the sound of a mind coming apart in slow motion, and it has not lost that quality.
The remake runs close to ten minutes and handles the source with care. The bones are intact, the low end is heavier and cleaner, and the middle section has more room to breathe on a big system. It works as a DJ tool rather than a nostalgia exercise, which is the right call. Emerson has never leaned on the Underworld association and he is not starting now.
What comes through is how little the track needed. Three decades on, the idea still holds.
