Decoded Magazine are happy to announce as part of our expansion, that good friend and well respected industry stalwart Paul Sawyer has joined Decoded Magazine as our Business Development Manager. In true Decoded style what better way is their to mark the occasion than in the form of music, that’s right. Paul provides us with his first residents mix for Decoded Radio including some unreleased gems from his label – EJ Underground.
There are two types of people in the music business, the ones that get their hands well and truly dirty and those who don’t bother. Winchester born Paul Sawyer is no doubt of the former; a driven musical multi-tasker completely immersed in the ocean of electronic music. Paul’s love for harmony and melody began at a young age as he began to master various instruments, starting bands with school friends and playing local gigs. Inspired by his younger brother, one of the original DJ’s on the free rave scene around Hampshire, Paul would later start to learn the art of mixing once the parties had started to move into clubs; developing a serious vinyl habit & embracing the pioneering, cutting edge dance music of the time.
As the expansion of the house music movement started to take hold of the early 90’s, Paul’s DJ career blossomed as a valued resident at a flurry of new, enticing clubbing hotspots around the home counties, including the House of Windsor parties, of which his first appearance involved warming up for major influencer and teenage hero Sasha Ibiza started to call in 1993, so Paul packed up his records and spent a season spinning in various bars on the White Isle, gaining a solid reputation for his euphoric, big, bad beats. He subsequently secured a coveted residency the following year at The Star Club (now Eden) playing weekly alongside legends such as Carl Cox and The Prodigy. Once arriving back in the UK, Paul was invited to become a part of the now infamous Menage a Trois parties, starting a fruitful 10 year career as a promoter and DJ for the iconic brand; hosting clubnights and boat parties on every continent plus warming up for some of the biggest names in dance music including Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold & John Digweed.
One of DJ Mag’s Top 10 Resident DJ’s in the UK 2012, Paul took the jump and started his own label, EJ Underground, delivering quality cuts from all genres of house music; later developing Krafted Records to focus on the deep tech and progressive vibes that were increasing in popularity and more representative of Paul’s new, tougher talking deep tech influenced sound. After a chance meeting at the first Brighton Music Conference with respected Endemic Digital Group boss Darren Braddick, the duo embarked on a lucrative new partnership merging their labels and launched the Krafted Music Group.
With the team’s voracious love for discovering new, exciting house music driving the development of the venture, Krafted has quickly transformed into something of an electronic music powerhouse since it’s inception in early 2014. KMG is now the daddy to 8 influential underground labels dividing and conquering all shades of house music, plus hosting weekly podcasts on digital radio stations Break London, Base, Mio & Midnight Express. Reconnecting with his vast network built through promoting and DJing the world over, Paul netted originals and collaborations from respected artists Dave Seaman, K Klass, Dale Middleton and more, thus boosting the Krafted Group’s notoriety and label content further and further up the digital store charts.
An inevitable foray into production followed shortly after the launch of KMG, an opportunity for Paul to demonstrate his versatility and an undeniable insight racked up through playing to thousands all over the globe with releases on each of Krafted Group’s imprints; alongside originals with LW Recordings, Sweep the Floor and Cockpitch Records amongst others. Paul’s new project Soultrak, with long time free-party buddy and fellow DJ Paul Moore is now gaining somewhat of a cult following for their warm, sublime sounds, plus Paul’s original deep house and tech productions are gleaning support from industry key players such as Paco Osuna, Acid Washed, Tensnake, Miguel Campbell & Stacey Pullen.
Last year saw Paul spin at B’estfest to 64,000 people, Blissfields and the mighty Bestival, EJ Underground celebrated their 100th release, his track ‘Keys’ from the Maximum Pain EP on Sounds of Juan hit #18 in the Beatport Techno Chart, his remix of ‘Salute The Floor’ by Soultrak vs The Cloudshapers hit #7 in the Beatport Minimal Chart, plus KMG’s conception of First Steps Recordings in liaison with the University of Bournemouth, devoted to nurturing new talent.
Set to come this year is the expansion of the Krafted Group, a release schedule packed full of dancefloor destroyers, plans to hit the States plus the addition of more festivals to their hosting roster.
