Decoded Sundays – Phil Davy

This weeks stellar mix is supplied by Music To Please Friends label boss Phil Davy. The You Belong residents’ selections are a perfect star studded Sunday chill vibe, from the opening bars of Cloud Shapes by Martin Nonstatic through to the triumphant and already solely missed Orbital ending, this is an eclectic, tuneful and brilliant mix.

Phil Davy, a DJ since the mid 90s, says he ‘discovered’ Progressive House by chance. “At the time I was DJ’ing Friday and Saturday nights at a local ritzy type club, I managed to blag my way onto a few promo lists off the back of it. The trance anthems were coming through thick and fast but they were a bit full on for my tastes. Every now and then though, in amongst all the fodder the odd deep gem would arrive. One day, the postman delivered Quivver – “She Does” and that was it, I had found progressive house!

From these humble beginnings Phil set up a mail order records services with two friends which later progressed into his first label. Tracks from which would find their way onto Renaissance and Perfecto compilations and Radio 1 Essential mixes of the time. Although short lived, the label did well and featured in the boxes of the Progressive elite, the knock on effect meant he was in demand for UK and international gigs. After a long hiatus in which he settled down and started a family, Phil is back with a renewed enthusiasm and passion for the scene. Music to Please Friends, his new label, launched last year is doing really well with a talented roster of artists and some fantastic releases.
