Decoded Sundays presents Meeting By Chance

Marcin Cichy (Meeting by Chance / Skalpel / Ninja Tune) is a multi-talented artist from Wroclaw, Poland, an expert in sound design, ambient and cinematographic sounds. Not only has he been producing successful music as Meeting by Chance and a half of Skalpel duo, but also made his name as an amazing visual and digital artist, creating futuristic interfaces with sci-fi motions. His music can be described as an original hybrid of dub and minimal with granular sound design, ambient sounds and unique quality sound.

Piano educated (his teacher used to describe him as ‘lazy but gifted’), Marcin set out to make music for television as a teenager, being one of the youngest Polish National TV music composers. At the same time he started to experiment with electronic music, as well as composing music for experimental video art. The latter was later released on DVD The Hidden Decade. Polish Video Art 1985-1995, which also presented works by other Polish pioneering video artists.

In the nineties Marcin founded Blend Records, where he compiled a CD for the biggest music magazine in Poland of that time. The CD was critically acclaimed and dubbed the best Polish ambient hip-hop record. Later on, Marcin founded Skalpel duo with Igor Pudło, where he did music and visuals. Skalpel received numerous honours, including Paszport POLITYKI, the most prestigious cultural award in Poland. Their debut album has been listed among 10 most important records of modern Polish jazz.

A long time skateboarder, Marcin had an accident, resulting in a major back injury. After spending a year in recovery, in 2012 Marcin reunited with Igor as Skalpel, and also started his solo career as Meeting by Chance. Marcin also runs a mastering studio. His clients include the BBC, Bruton Music Ltd, Telewizja Polska, Ninja Tune, Hexstatic and Brian Eno.

For two consecutive years, Marcin (as Skalpel) co-operated and participated in Sacrum Profanum Festival in Kraków, Poland; he performed with Polish avant-garde composers and with Mira Calix, Clark and other artists from WARP and Ninja Tune records, as well as AUKSO Orchestra and Kronos Quartet. The concert at the Sacrum Profanum Festival is considered the most important musical event of 2011.
