Following on from the success of Kepler’s ‘Higher’ EP (INSTINCT Remix), discotech WAX is ready to stack the shelves with its second release, marking another stamp of approval for the young label. 002 comes in the form of Alessio Viggiano’s Standing on Saturn EP, featuring a remix from the prolific, Nick Beringer. With many years of parties under their belt, the promotion and sharing of pure underground music is at the centre point of the focus of the label, and this work is, without doubt, a great addition.
‘Kalisvar’ opens the EP with its steely tech house drum beat and popping bass line providing the foundations in which fluttering synths and ethereal vocals can drift in and out. ‘Marshmallow’ follows, keeping to that rustic vibe with the same foundations whilst introducing new static whilst paying homage to mother nature herself with the sounds of birdsong painting a picture amongst these spluttering sounds.
The B-side, self-titled track, gives us a more unearthly feel to the work. Whilst still in the same mood as the A-side, with its warm, active bass line and direct straight house beat, the celestial pads make this side lean more onto the alien side of dance music. This track is complemented with a remix by Nick Beringer which still maintains this vibe whilst giving an alternative flavour to the work.
Overall, this EP is a solid addition to discotech WAX. Blending metallic, distinctive house beats with minimal, whizzing synth sounds paint a fine picture of what’s to come from the discotech camp.
