EMC today announces its first speakers for the EMC STUDIO, part of the EMC ACADEMY program 2018

The EMC ACADEMY program is dedicated to attendees that are students or artists, in the early stages of their careers, or simply considering a career in electronic music. EMC ACADEMY tickets give access to the EMC STUDIO, Tech & Digital, Artists & Managers and Events & Touring breakout streams.

The 2018 EMC STUDIO is focussed on the creation of music with two-days of production and songwriting workshops and masterclasses hosted by inspiring producers, songwriters and engineers. Housed in one of UTS’ brilliant 360 engagement spaces, each EMC STUDIO session is presented “in the round” with state of the art AV screens surrounding the room, giving every ACADEMY attendee a close up view of the all EMC STUDIO sessions.

Defected signees Human Movement present an Ableton Push Live workshop, sharing their skills and expertise that saw them successfully traverse from DJ to fully-fledged live act, gracing stages in Ibiza, Croatia, London and Asia. An essential workshop for any DJ looking at the transition to live, this workshop will deliver the foundational tips and tricks you need to start the journey into a live show.

With live instrumentation finding more of a place in electronic music recordings, Mickey Kojak leads a hands-on workshop on Recording Live Instrumentation. Mickey’s journey since 2017 has seen a huge tonal step forward for the Sydney-based producer, singer and engineer with the distinct presence of live instrumentation in his records pricking up the ears of Majestic Casual, triple j and Sirius XM who have all heavily supported his releases in the past 18 months. This workshop is a must for any producer wanting to take the production approach beyond the laptop.

Sydney/Ibiza house devotee Beth Yen makes her EMC ACADEMY debut presenting a House & Techno Remix Workshop, in collaboration with two other producers. Remixing an iconic record reflecting EMC’s ‘The Future of Yesterday’ theme, the House & Techno Remix Workshop will demonstrate the journey of creating a remix from initial parts to finish. Joining Beth to host this workshop is Brux, who although only launching as an artist in 2018 has already had two singles released on Australian powerhouse label etcetc, and is fresh back from the Red Bull Music Academy in Berlin.

Legendary mix and mastering engineer Klaus Hill hosts a workshop honing in on perfecting the studio process of Recording Vocals. With decades of experience as a producer releasing on the world’s biggest electronic music labels and as mix and/or mastering engineer for Pnau, Peking Duk, Set Mo, Made in Paris, Will Sparks, PACES and countless others – you can be sure that Klaus has all the hacks to guarantee laying down the perfect vocal for your record.

Besides the building’s 5 Star Green Star Design rating certified by the Green Building Council of Australia, the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building has a state of the art auditorium and multiple breakout spaces including 360 engagement spaces, providing the perfect home for EMC’s new conference program format. The 2018 conference program features a two-day keynote program and four additional streams of content focusing on Tech and Digital, an Artists & Managers Hub, Events & Touring and EMC Studio which hosts two days of workshops and masterclasses dedicated to music creation.

EMC welcomes back triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe as EMCPLAY LIVE programmer. One of Australia’s most respected programmers, Dave has a proven track record of pin pointing the emerging artists that go onto long and thriving careers domestically and in many cases, internationally. EMCPLAY LIVE 2018 artists will be announced in the coming weeks.

EMC’s 2018 theme is THE FUTURE OF YESTERDAY. At a time when as an industry we are more future focused than ever before with constant disruption, tech developments, big data and analytics, AI, VR, blockchain and more, EMC’s 2018 theme reflects the reality that despite our future focus, we are always looking back to the traditional business models of the past to learn from the shortfalls and errors, and to work towards a brighter future in the music business which offers a fairer playing field for all involved, be they music creators or music businesses.

Musically – especially in electronic music which has a DNA embedded in sample based culture – we are forever referencing past sounds and past genres – reworking, remixing and refurnishing nostalgic sounds of yesteryear in a contemporary take for today. EMC’s THE FUTURE OF YESTERDAY theme will also pay homage to some of the most golden years in electronic and dance music from the last three decades – 1988; 1998; 2008.

With over 100 speakers contributing to EMC 2018, there are many more inspirational pioneers and figures yet to be announced.
