Melbourne’s Ugenius Music hits release number 100 with a two-part compilation that tracks 13 years of progressive house and melodic techno from one of Australia’s more dependable underground labels.
Bebetta’s “We’re getting down” is a solid entry that shows why the German producer remains relevant to the label’s identity. It’s a properly constructed bit of work, driving percussion meeting subtle melodic development without any unnecessary flourishes. The kind of track that does what it needs to do on a floor without demanding attention it hasn’t earned.
Since Jacob Malmo and Tom Evans from The Journey started Ugenius in 2012, the label has kept its focus tight on the progressive side of house and the more musical end of techno. Over 144 artists and 100 releases, that consistency has meant something. Luke Alessi, Tim Englehardt, Gorge, Kellerkind, Cioz, Jamie Stevens, Mike Rish, Lexer and others have all contributed work that fits the brief without sounding identical.
This compilation mixes established label contributors with newer names, mapping both the label’s evolution and the broader Australian electronic music landscape over the last decade-plus. Bebetta’s track sits comfortably in that context, functional club music that’s been thought through in the studio. No grand statements, just a label that’s put in the work reaching a milestone worth acknowledging.
