Catapulted into 2017 as one of Sasha’s artists to watch this year, rising hardware-fiend and technoid groove sculptor Jody Barr isn’t missing a beat. Fresh from launching his own trend-free Portable Minds imprint and past excursions on Krankbrother, and Nofitstate, South Wales’ Barr now makes his debut on James Zabiela’s, Born Electric.
A wry nod to Tarantino and filled with as many twists, the title track more than lives up to its name; What ignites as an unadorned-but-thumping acid track gradually morphs into a psychedelic hinterland of soaring textures and sense-blurring textures before dropping us from a dizzying height back into the naked acid melee. Genuinely head-bending.
Don’t stop at the donuts as there’s plenty more to feast on: ‘Late Night Swimmer’ is an unhurried, much more introspective trip. Once again Jody begins with a reduction before shrouding us with elements that counter and balance between sinewy acid and swooping strings to evocative effect.
‘Crushing My Smokes’ concludes business on a much sterner, stark tone. Ominous in tone, steady in build, twisted in pay-off; everything is about the tension and full thrust release that doesn’t hit until way past the halfway mark. Reminiscent of a young Agoria in some ways, but with his own precision elements and signature, its metallic, space-bound aesthetic complements the sharper acid twangs of the EP.
We told you he isn’t missing a beat. Expect plenty more plot twists from the Portable Mind very soon…
