The Australia-Russia via Egypt connection joining Mark Youssef & Novikoff is strong. Each of their deftly crafted releases is a highly anticipated event for many DJs around the globe and their latest ‘Propagules’ creation is no exception. Remix duties fall to the supremely talented Desyfer & Hypnosis, who have a long-standing relationship that has seen the pair work on many projects for Tactal Hots Music, the flourishing North West (UK) underground label.
In its original form ‘Propagules’ is a lusciously mellow hypnotic beast, its restrained and intricate arrangement riding on an irresistible low-slung groove. The Desyfer & Hypnosis remix subtly ups the energy levels, gliding a soaring and swooping flight into the ether, fuelled with their trademark delicate percussive touch and breath-taking atmospherics. Both tracks are masterfully executed examples of incredibly graceful creativity.
Australian-born Mark Youssef grew up in his parents’ hometown, Cairo, Egypt. His journey into music began playing drums at the age of six before he discovered the world of electronic music in 1996 and started DJing across Egypt, pausing only to study for his degree in Computer Software Engineering. Since then his career as a DJ/Producer has grown exponentially and he regularly tours the globe as a highly respected artist, releasing his music on a multitude of quality labels.
Mark’s collaborative studio partner, the enigmatic Novokoff, hails from Surgut, Russia. Much revered in his home city, he is a DJ/Producer who is not limited by restrictive genre boundaries, always looking to push the envelope further. Their recent EP ‘What Do You Know’ featuring Egyptian vocalist Yousra El Gendy (Btech Noir Records) is also well-worth checking as a further example of the duo’s visionary talents.
Spencer Hickson (aka Desyfer) is a multitasking music producer, DJ and label owner, who has been involved in the music industry for over 25 years. As an early pioneer of the underground scene his depth of knowledge and unbounded creativity have seen him continually develop and evolve as an artist. His long-standing relationship with Hypnosis has seen the pair work on many projects for Tactal Hots Music, including adverts for Lexus and Duracell. Recent critically acclaimed studio highlights have included ‘Geckoblaster’ (featuring a TILT remix) and the duo’s stunning remix for the immaculately curated ‘Phoenix – Rise Up 20’ project.
