Five on Friday with Andy Pye

Andy Pye’s relationship with music started before most of us had even formed an opinion about it. He was seven years old when he bought his first record, and the obsession has never loosened its grip. This week he steps up as our Five on Friday guest, and if his selections are anything like as wide-ranging as his collection, we’re in for a proper ride.

His earliest DJ gigs came courtesy of promoter John Keenan at The Duchess of York in Leeds, spinning between live acts for a few quid and loving every second of it. By 1993 he was working at HMV Leeds, which as any Leeds head of a certain vintage will tell you, was ground zero for a generation of friendships that have somehow managed to outlast the shop itself.

Nine years as a resident at Outlaws Yacht Club followed, along with the kind of broad, ever-expanding crate that makes the question “what do you play?” almost impossible to answer with a straight face. These days you’ll find him in the summer sunshine at Palm Trees over Pontefract at The Robin Hood, playing records with mates the way it should be done.

When he’s not behind the decks he’s behind the mic, running a weekly Saturday show on Music For Dreams (14.00 to 15.00 UK), a bi-monthly Sounds in Waves slot on Alto Radio (first Saturday, 19.00 to 20.00 GMT), and the monthly Paradise Social show on 1BTN Brighton (third Saturday, 22.00 to midnight), the latter a collaboration with Craig Christon. His next live outing is 1st May at North Bar Leeds for Other Side of Sunrise alongside Nick Lonsdale.

Deep Earth Network (D.E.N)

This is on the amazing Group Mind label. Written & Produced by Danny Hammond. This label is run by Richard Norris (The Grid, Time & Space Machine) So you know what you are going to get, or are you. It’s a bit like being housed in a swimming pool all alone with the lights switched off. You are just going to float, float on right down the stream if like me you are a fan of ambient, spoken work, early psychedelics, klf and film scores then this is right up your street.

Mark Barrott feat. Norma Winstone & Leo Taylor

If you are aware of Mark Barrottโ€™s recent work since 2014 then chances are you may well have come across him on International Feel or Running Back or even his own Mark Barrott label. His sketches series on International Feel are again in that really lovely part of the music stratosphere that crosses lots of different boundaries, if you havenโ€™t heard previous releases I would highly recommend. This release again hits the spot for your mind to relax and take you on a short journey of wonderful sounds.

Roge – Road To Nowhere

This as you can guess by the title is a cover of the Talking Heads classic โ€˜Road to Nowhereโ€™ The cover is part of a full album on the BBE Compilation โ€˜Naive Melodiesโ€™ Rogรชโ€™s version is steeped in Afro-Brazilian traditions and gives a great twist of this track.

Kif Productions – Still Out

From the nod on the cover to the slightly playful title you can see where the influence for this album comes from.

If not, listen upโ€ฆ

Will Cookson and Tom Haverly, have brought to our ears what would seem an eloquent follow up to the KLFโ€™s – Chill Out or maybe the long lost companion to the aforementioned classic. What โ€˜Still Outโ€™ offers is a delightful listen from the moment you press play to the moment it ends, although you will want to press play all over again. As I touched upon earlier, my love of soundscapes is something I always get drawn into when digging for music. The little snippets, the spoken words and I think it’s almost like a relaxation sense that when putting mixes together then this is the glue that keeps them flowing. The album has been so popular that it has been repressed three times and along with this there has been a screening to accompany the release.

Rotation Sound System Presents – Everything Youโ€™re About To Hear Is True Vol 1

This compilation was put together by some friends who have such impeccable taste they thought they would share some of this music with us. Chances are you have heard some of these over time if you have been to their wonderful curated festival or just heard any of them on their respective radio shows and DJ gigs.
It’s full of crate digging delights. Brought together by Rotation founders Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, alongside the Wrekin Havoc trio of Rob J, Stuart Robinson, and Rich Hall. You are likely to hear these and many more of this ilk over at our parties in Pontefract.
