Five on Friday with Darko C

This week’s Five on Friday comes courtesy of Mr Darko C, in conjunction with our friends over atThe Red Telephone. A selector whose ear for the unexpected has earned him a quiet but loyal following on the south coast.

Based in Poole, Dorset, Darko returned to the decks fifteen years ago, pulled back by a long-held interest in underground electronic music and the particular gravity of Eastern European and Russian producers. Artists like Andrey Pushkarev and Mihai Popoviciu shaped his sensibility early on, and that influence still runs through his selections today. He has a habit of chasing the track that raises the hairs on the back of the neck, the kind of record that sits a little outside the obvious and lingers in a room long after it has played.

Over the past decade and a half, he has built a reputation across local venues in Poole and a steady run of private parties, delivering sets that lean on atmosphere, considered selection, and a genuine affection for music that moves people rather than simply fills a floor. It is a quietly confident approach, and one that rewards the listener who pays attention.

For this week’s column, Darko C shares five tracks that speak to that sensibility. Over to him.

My first selection is by a Producer / DJ I ย have long admired. Kirill Matteev on Mixcult records. MixCult is a based radio statin and record label presenting Deep, minimal dub techno.ย

The Romanian DJ and producer Mihai Popoviciuย has built a powerful reputation for quality electronic music that spans techno to tech and deeper sounding house. Here he dives into his more grooving side with three tracks that set a distinct mood. What I Need brings a strong vocal together with drifty synths and tight drums to make an atmospheric, rolling cut.

Found this track recently whilst on one of my trawls. Love the electro vibe and how this track develops.ย

Funky, dark techy track! Damian Lazarus reveals the eighth chapter of Crosstown Rebels acclaimed annual โ€˜SPIRITSโ€™ VA compilation series. The latest instalment sees the label founder once again curating a carefully balanced lineup of emerging voices and established names, with the eight-track collection set for release.

Driving beat with electronic vocals on the housewarming label.ย
