Matt Walsh’s love affair with DJing and production took root in the late 1990s, during his university years when progressive house was at its commercial and creative peak. As the new millennium arrived, electroclash exploded onto the scene, with DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo Records, City Rockers and Playhouse rewiring dancefloors across Europe. It was against this backdrop that Matt began honing what would become his trademark sound: a modern, disco-infused take on electronic house and techno.
A residency at East London’s seminal T Bar proved to be the catalyst. It was there in 2007 that Turbo Recordings boss Tiga spotted him, setting in motion a long-running residency with both Bugged Out! and Turbo, and a touring schedule that has since taken him around the globe, both solo and alongside some of the scene’s most respected names.
His imprint, Clouded Vision Recordings, has built a reputation for unearthing talent from all corners of the world, with releases from Red Axes, long-time friend Daniel Avery and many more. His two mixed compilations, “The Clouded Vision Experiment”, drew critical acclaim from Mixmag, GQ and DJ Mag.
Since relocating to Margate in 2017, Matt has channelled his energy into The Tap Room, transforming one of the town’s hidden corners into a thriving small bar where local and travelling DJs can be found behind the decks every week. In 2023 he reignited Movement, the club night he originally founded with Daniel Avery back in 2011. Now held quarterly at Faith In Strangers in Margate, the first six parties all sold out, with Erol Alkan, Daniel Avery, Manfredas, Optimo and Richard Fearless joining Matt on the decks. Optimo (Espacio) return for the next instalment on Friday 26th June.
For his Five on Friday with The Red Telephone, Matt picks five records that have shaped his journey. You can catch Matt playing at Faith in Strangers in Margate on June 26th
The kind of bumpy 707 acid groove I like to play to bring up the tempo in a warm up set, or hold the floor midway through peak time.
Peak time classic electro banger.
Heavy techno (for me) but one for the hands in the air.
Dark acid, for late night
Slowed right down, this is how I want a club to sound when I walk in and people are arriving.
