To welcome in Global Underground’s 20th Anniversary, GU has created a brand new mix album series called Global Underground:Select in which they’ve spliced, edited, re-edited and polished 34 outstanding tracks into two slick DJ mixes. With dance music heavyweights like Bicep, Hot Since 82, Scuba and Carl Craig on show, its not hard to imagine this is a serious slice of contemporary dance music. But not content to just play all the hits, they have also looked for hot upcoming dance music stars to add a certain spice. Released in a few weeks with a specially designed and packaged CD format, theres also a digital download option for those non collectors. Pre order your copy here.

“I’m really excited to be guiding GU into its landmark 20th year in 2016, and what better way to celebrate than with the launch of an exciting new series, Global Underground:Select.

Over the past few months here at GUHQ we’ve been scouring demos and promos to find the very best tracks to compile this new album, we’ve managed to fit phenomenal established talent like Maceo PlexLuciano and Dubfire side by side with exciting new emerging stars like Jonas Rathsman and new GU signing TNTS from Belgium to create a true reflection of the global dance-floors.” – Andy Horsfield (GU Founder)

Getting down to the music, its a pretty intense ride from the off. The big Reese bass of Jonas Rathman’s New Generation ushers in the thoughtful melodic sound GU became so famous for. Moving through more deepness via Dubfire’s epic remix of Hot Since 82 & Habischmann’s Leave Me, and the achingly beautiful Martin Roth remix of Relentless by Kris Davis and Yost on my favourite new label of last year, Constant Circles, we find ourselves helplessly hypnotised by the groove. Further treats await in the form of Roman Flugels’ delicate and melancholy Teenage Engineering, Guy Mantzur’s brilliant reinterpretation of the very personal Sofia by Mike Griego and Amber Long, and on toward the deep satisfying tribal groove of 7direction(s) by Luciano feat. JAW remixed to perfection by Dennis Ferrer. Rounding out disc one is a trio of talent: Robert Hoods raw techno workout of Gary Martin – Well works perfectly with Carl Craig’s gritty remix of Aphrohead – Grown Man Cryy and Lane8 and Matthew Dear’s brilliant Undercover (Yotto Remix) makes for a fitting and epic finale. Phew, I’m out of breath, and thats only disc one!!

Disc two, in classic style, ups the tempo somewhat, picking the big hitters like Jeremy Olander, Maceo Plex and D-Nox & Beckers in the opening salvo. But the real treat for me personally, was the inclusion of Monte, an artist I’ve only really discovered recently. I’ve been hammering Radical (and Simpler) for some time, and so hearing it rubbing shoulders with such esteemed company was a real moment. Further in to the disc is another one I’m feeling, Cristoph – Forgone Conclusion (Kiko Remix) – the combination of tech influences with that soulful undertone is very compelling and I hope we see much more of it this year. Never losing their head, mid way through the second disc we find a spell binding Michael Mayer remix of Energie by Mathias Kaden which sounds unlike anything you can imagine, is simply spellbinding. Then we head down the familiar techno path with the every reliable Wehbba and a monstrous Quivver remix of Framewerk – Feel You Hold You, a real festival favourite. To round out this mix, GU deepen the vibe and bliss everyone out starting with arguably Scuba’s best track for a while, Too Strong (in its Nicole Moudaber guise). Krankbrother’s Obscure Visions adds a much needed melodic twist before Kompakt’s Terranova feat Lydmoor and Bon Homme sing us out the door (so to speak). By the end of disc two, I’m throughly satisfied with the journey I’ve been on. Clearly, Global Underground has a very good idea on how to construct a great mix, and for those new DJs out there eager to learn, you could do a lot worse than buy this mix and soak in the experience.

Another GU victory.
