Holland’s De School resident Sandrien lays down 10 essential tracks in her crate

There is no doubt that Sandrien is part of the reason the Amsterdam scene is enjoying such a moment in the spotlight. Since the 90s, her hard work has helped established the city’s now worldwide reputation for Techno. As a former resident at the legendary Trouw, who now holds down the same job at De School, she has further cemented her own position as local star turned global ambassador.

Though still deeply entrenched in her hometown scene, Sandrien is now a welcome guest at vital clubs like Berghain, Bassiani and Concrete in Paris, and frequently tours Asian clubs like Contact and Circus. It is at these places that she joins the dots between the past and the present, with driving drums and well-structured sets that are adventurous when needed and familiar when the feeling takes her. Her musically open mind attracts similar open minded crowds who appreciate her every move, whether that’s a sweaty set in the cosy confines of Concrete in Paris or on an enormous platform at somewhere like Awakenings, Lowlands or Loveland.

At home, she is one of the founders of the notorious Is Burning brand. Sandrien is also an affiliate of the vital Rush Hour empire, which takes in a multitude of labels, taste making record shop and parties all over the world. She was also given the honour of playing a special farewell Boiler Room set from Trouw shortly before it closed and was part of the outstanding Boiler Room at Skate Café, where she thrilled with her energetic selections, and she continues to curate her own De School night with quality guests like Blawan, DJ Nobu and Oscar Mulero.

As a producer, Sandrien always makes a real impact with her well-honed and stylish sounds on the likes of Darko Esser’s Wolfskuil and Ben Sims’ respected Theory label. Always evolving while staying true to the uncompromising roots of techno, Sandrien remains at the beating heart of both the local and international scenes.

Sandrien lays down a selection of memorable moments at De School, tracks she plays downstairs (mostly techno) and upstairs at het Muzieklokaal (more house, chicago and disco orientated sets)

The Basement tracks (downstairs)

Four Tet – Evening Side (Text Records)

First track I’ve ever played at De School at the basement 3 years ago. A long trip, love the vocals and the overall ease

Steve Bicknell – Game of existence (Granulart)

Perfect basement track, gritty and dusty. Love how to kick is on top of the track. Raw and dirty stuff!

TVA – The Problem (Curle Recordings)

I played this one during ADE 2018. It was a difficult time, my father was sick, this one got me and still gets to me all the time <3

Oliver Deutschmann – Nightshifted (Suara)

Peaktime School (or any club) killer. Played this one a lot and it works every time. Strobesss on!

Ebi – San (Space Teddy)

Basement closing track, great Japanese acidic space track!

16B – Escape (Driving To Heaven) (Omid’s Dark Dub) (Hooj Choons)

This dark proggie track suits the dark sweaty basement really well. Eyes closed and go!

Luke Slater – Love (Marcel Dettmann’s Black Gloves Remix) (Mote-Evolver)

Great remix of an all-time classic! Played it last month at De School. To be honest, this whole remix package is amazing, love every remix on this release!

Het Muzieklokaal tracks (upstairs)

Evelyn Thomas – High Energy (Vocal) (Record Shack Records)

I remember playing this one at a summer weekender upstairs at het Muzieklokaal during an house / disco orientated set. The room was hot and sweaty and the moment just felt right to drop it. It was an energy explosion. Think I was jumping around haha

UNIT 4 – Body Dub (Alden Tyrell Edit 01) (Clone)

Played this one at het Muzieklokaal last year, this track still sounds so fresh!

Grace Jones – Slave To The Rhythm (Blooded) (ZTT)

I love this long version a lot, played it as last track at het Muzieklokaal 2 years ago. Love how the first 4 minutes are instrumental and then when her vocal slides in after 4 minutes…That’s just pure ecstasy!
