Hamburg-based producer Ian Pilosa approaches techno through an exploratory lens. On Guiyang, that sensibility comes into especially sharp focus: the title track was shaped in isolation during an unexpected and enjoyable five-day stay in the Chinese city, cut off from Western internet. Bubbling synth work, driving rhythms and a hypnotic, tension-building pull give the track a distinct sense of motion and atmosphere.
The EP’s second track, Ethylene, pushes further into raw territory, driven by off-beat hi-hats and a tougher, more propulsive edge. Label boss, Minus Magnus, recasts it with a rawer touch, introducing chopped-up sections that heighten the tension. Closing the record, Oslo-based EMS delivers an atmospheric rework of Guiyang that leans into deep, dubby techno territory, with a weighty bassline and spacious detail.
