Title: Call It Techno EP
Label: Intec Digital
Released: Out now! Buy on Beatport
It is a special feeling when you hear one of those tracks again from “back in the days” that immediately brings you back to a certain night or a certain year. Maybe it’s a classic, or maybe one of those rather unknown ones that just your favourite DJ was playing. Anyways you immediately feel fuzzy inside, and every now and then one of these pearls get a small polish up and is re-released.
Intec is a label, which does not need a big introduction. Run by King Carl Cox and his long-term friend and business partner in crime Jon Rundell, the label is known for its steady stream of high-quality techno having a catalogue packed with releases from both some of the biggest stars in the industry and also up and coming talents.
This time we are served something truly special, and when you listen in on it you feel warm. And fuzzy. Frankie Bones is described as one of the driving forces behind bringing techno to the US and was also one of the first New York-based artists to gain international fame. ‘Call It Techno’ was first released in 1989 on Breaking Bones Records, a label that played an essential part in forming house and techno music. The release turned into one of Frankie’s most popular ones. For 2017 the track has gotten a small tune up and the re-mastered version is now out with remixes by Carlo Lio and Raito. In the original the instantly recognizable bass line and catchy vocals that got so many hooked immediately strikes, taking you on a journey back to the glory days of Acid House and the warehouse parties where it all began.
Carlo Lio who is loved for his very distinct style of industrial and noisy techno and releases regularly on labels such as SCI+TEC, Mood, and Saved, is not holding back in his re-interpretation of the track. Carlo incorporates some of the distinct vocal elements from the original into a full frontal heavy weighing and energy packed dark techno tune exploding with its powerful drop. French artist Raito, which you maybe know through his solid releases on Boysnoize Records, has put himself on the map as “one to watch”. Again this fairly young producer shows off his skills in a funked up techno remix relying on the heavy bass line synth combined with the characteristic vocals, holding the vibe rough and fun to the core.
‘Light It Up’ is the second original on the release, and the vocals and heavy groove are mashed up and played with through skilled manipulation of sound and effect. It also comes as an instrumental version where you really get the intense acid line in focus which sweeps you off the floor with a series drops designed to take the listeners high.
All in all a banger release that is great fun to listen too. The combination of classic and new sounds together with a nicely selected blend of talents provides a solid techno EP and it is a safe bet to say that the tracks will be heard on a lot of dance floors in the coming time.
