The Launchpad Mini was unveiled by Novation at this year’s NAMM Show. Its part of an ever growing launch family, which includes controllers and midi keyboards of different varieties and sizes.
The LM is the baby brother of the Launchpad. To be exact the mini is 37% smaller in size. The latter has proven to be a massive success for Ableton user whether in the studio or when performing. The LM comes designed for that ‘straight out of box’ functionality to integrate with the iPad generation due to its new app but is also works with a Mac or PC. It design is sturdy and very lightweight, which is perfect for artist on the road a lot, due to it portability and durability, all of which is bus powered.
Like its big Brother the mini has tri colour pads, laid out in a 8 x 8 grid formation and provides providing numerous other functions such as launching loops or one shot samples. All pads are fully midi mappable and of course templates can be saved for users’ preference. Another new feature is Novations “InControl” which is a streamlined version of Novation ‘Automap’ software, which essentially is a midi mapping software. The difference between “InControl” is it total flexibility to move between templates and standard MIDI mappings.
If I was to be pedantic it would be that the pads are not velocity sensitive but for the paltry price of £80 I cannot complain. It also comes complete with Ableton Lite & FL Studio and few others bit of software, so in the price against value comparison, like its big brother wins.
