Previous Future Leader Lee Williams is not only a dab hand behind the decks, he is also fast becoming a great producer as well. “I started writing this EP in January of this year.” Lee tells me “ I really wanted to create a blend between dark, ambient and groovy techno. Which are often sounds I look for when compiling my DJ sets”. Sounds of Juan is part of Wez Saunders’ Endemic Digital Inc family, which was named as iDJ label of the month in July 2011. Since its creation 3 years ago SOJ has very quickly made a mark on the traditional progressive house, tech house & techno markets although strategic changes for 2013/14 see much more of a focus on the rolling techno/tech house sounds of late. And rolling tech is wants on offer here with Lee’s solid 3 tracker.

Opening the EP, title track ‘Her Chemical’ weaves a tale of beats and bass building a quiet tension up to the breakdown. Its a crisp, well executed production with some wonderful drum programming. As we exit the break a groovy perc lines leads the charge and really got my hips moving. This will work very well in a post midnight house/tech set.

Aristocrat oozes quality. More tribal than the first track a delayed stab forms the basis of the groove to which Lee deftly adds in hats and shakers. This is much more my cup of tea, but then I’m a sucker for tribal tracks as you all know. As with all of the work on this EP, the solitary breakdown mid track is a lesson in keeping tension, and as the beats and bass kick back in my head in nodding and my hips are wiggling… my housemate is looking at me funny now too!

My immediate thoughts on hearing the opening bars of ‘Compound’ was it sounds like a DJ Misjah & DJ Tim track called Access. Again the theme of the delayed stab reverberates in my headphones and Im captivated. Lee has a unique almost minimal way of making really good techno. Its very clear to see these are made purely for the dance floor and are the products of a great many hours of dedication.

Like I said at the start, a solid three tracker and worth a moment of your time to investigate.
