The 2016 BURN Residency concluded with the winner, Lollino from Italy being selected by a panel of mentors and judges including Carl Cox, Dubfire and Philipp Straub. Following a four-month search that began with over 9,000 applications from aspiring DJs the panel selected the 29 year-old from the eventual three finalists.
“To win a competition like BURN Residency is amazing. I learnt so much from the mentors, the other competitors and the whole experience. BURN Residency has really given me the help and support to become a better DJ and already given me lots of opportunities for the future!” – Lollino
The Italian DJ went from sleeping in his music studio, to qualifying for the BURN Residency Bootcamp in May this year after impressing the judges and the audience with his 100% vinyl set in the Italian Mix off. Originally from Torino, Lollino has been DJing for eight years and as part of winning the competition, he has won a prize of €100,000 to help progress his DJing career. He said: “I started mixing as an amateur when I was 16, inspired by a couple of turntables given to me by a former local DJ. I was so fascinated that I spent an entire year on them, trying to figure out how to use them.” In its sixth year, BURN Residency selected one aspiring DJ from 26 countries, following an initial application process through to regional mix off events. The winners of each event were then selected to spend up to three weeks during June at the BURN Residency ‘Bootcamp’ in the world’s dance music capital, Ibiza. During this time, the competitors attended lectures, workshops, technical master classes and participated in numerous production and performance challenges.
“There have been some fantastic DJs that have come through BURN Residency this year and it was a tough decision for the judges. The three finalists; Mira Joo and Ayman Awad and Lollino have all performed so well and this has been arguably the most competitive BURN Residency competition yet.” – Carl Cox
Head Mentors have included high profile Ibiza figures such as Carl Cox, John Digweed and Dubfire with guest mentoring from the likes of five-time DJ Award winner Luciano and house music master Miguel Campbell. Following the Bootcamp, three finalists were selected, Lollino, Mira Joo and Ayman Awad. The finalists then went on to complete a 10 week long Ibiza DJ Residency. Previous BURN Residency winners have gone on to be signed, including 2015 winner DJ Samanta sign to Dubfire’s The Bullitt Agency and 2014 winner Javi Row joining Carl Cox and John Digweed on the legendary Safehouse Management roster.
“BURN Residency is one of the most important activations we do as a brand. We feel it’s extremely important to support dance music culture and the next wave of great talent. Lollino’s journey through the competition has been incredible to be part of, he’s an extremely talent DJ and a worthy winner of BURN Residency 2016. We would like to thank everyone that took part in the competition this year from the contestants to the mentors.” – Lisa Buchan (Director of Culture & Music BURN Energy)
