The dawn of House Music can be arguably traced back to many places but no place is more famous for the evolution of House than Chicago. In 1984, Jesse Saunders released a 12-inch single entitled, ‘On and On’ which was a megamix that included loops from several electronic disco records. The bassline was said to be from Player One’s 1979 release, ‘Space Invaders’. Saunders collaborated with Vince Lawrence to add hypnotic lyrics and electronic instruments such as the Roland TR-808 drum machine, the Korg Poly-61 synthesizer, and the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer. Other Chicago DJs began to recreate and produce original songs in a similar style.

Jamie Principle and Frankie Knuckle’s ‘Your Love’ and Chip E’s ‘The Jack Trax Record’ out of Chicago used complex rhythms, simple basslines, sampling technology, and sparse vocals. By 1985, House Music was a relative term in Chicago and record stores such as Importes Etc., State Street Records, JRS Music shop, and Gramaphone Records started carrying house music and selling records in the tens of thousands. The Hot Mix 5 Radio show was also a major force in carrying this movement to the forefront with DJs from both Chicago and Detroit being regular listeners in the 80s.

Since the dawn and birth of what we see as House Music of today in Chicago, many artists have emerged such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, Green Velvet aka Cajmere, Phuture, and the late and great Frankie Knuckles. In order to celebrate the home of House Music, Mamby On The Beach was created to reflect Chicago summertime vibes and preserve the history of House Music. Mamby on The Beach will be located at Oakwood Beach and an array of artists for two days of music across three stages.

Animal Collective, Thomas Jack, Tycho, Lido, Atmosphere, Chet Faker, Santigold, Ryans Hemworth and more will take to the two main stages while the DJ Tent will provide a magnificent combination of House and Techno. Friday will see the likes of Tale of Us, Black Coffee, Shiba San, Sonny Fodera, Gene Farris, and more in the DJ Tent and Saturday will be Loco Dice, Derrick Carter, The Martinez Brothers, Steve Bug, The Black Madonna, and others!

Also since the festival is going to be held over the 4th of July holiday weekend this year, we’re bringing in a ton of amazing food vendors, which you can check out here.
