Decoded Residents Radio with December Mix of the Month Winner – Achteraph

Is the techno scene oversaturated? Maybe, but that doesn’t stop Achteraph for following his passion. Raw beats with a dystopian feel and a whiff of acid: that’s what defines his music. Big inspirations are Aphex Twin, Ben Sims, Clouds, Karenn, Luke Slater and Perc & Truss.

Decoded Magazine Mix of the Month Winner Achteraph, the alter ego of Raphaël ter Maat, is quite new to the scene. His interest in electronic music started to develop a few years ago when he started to listen to electronica artists such as Daft Punk and Justice. After attending a few techno events, his musical preference started to shift towards the darker side of techno.

The feeling to express himself in DJ’ing came a little while after that. Being creative has always been important for Raphaël, whenever it’s film, photography or design. After working in the creative industry for a while, he felt he needed new ways to express himself creatively: music. This quickly resulted in buying a cheap DJ-set and learning to beatmatch. After a few months, he started to invest in more and better equipment. At this point, Raphaël started doing various smaller gigs.

Raphael’s sets are much more than just a few songs thrown together. It’s about telling a story and taking people on that journey. Defined by a lot of energy and dynamics. This is done in various ways. Such as experimenting with other genres and off-beat songs. Track selection is the most important aspect for Raphaël though.

Don’t expect a Beatport top 100 playlist though. Hours upon hours are spent in searching for unique gems and “secret weapons” that make the DJ set memorable. Especially the love for old 90’s techno tunes is big. Nothing is more satisfying than finding an old banger.

There’s no ambition to make DJ’ing his job: it’s pure passion and love for the music. But that doesn’t mean there’s no ambition to grow further and shake up the dance floors. There is nothing wrong with playing for money, but it shouldn’t be the main reason.
