Welcome back to this months ‘Open House’ and this August edition is an EWax special! The boss, ‘SY’, stopped by for chat as he is my ‘Get To Know’, Music Of The Month comes from label new comers ‘Kreutziger’ and Mix Of The Month comes San Fran’s EWax artist Sam Haskin.
The label is run by all round good guy by the name of SY. Since he launched the label in 2016 there has been a string of outstanding releases from the likes of Djebali, Chris Stussy, Fabe, DJOKO, Monika Ross, Paolo Rocco and Sam Haskin to name a few. The EWax concept consists of the EWax main label, but you can also find sister label’s EWax White & EWax Black providing some different sounds across Minimal, House and Deep. The new Editions label is EWax’s digital only label and features some exciting upcoming talent as well as more established names crossing the genres once again to always keep things fresh.
‘Get To Know’…..SY
Hailing from Manchester (UK) but now based in Berlin for the past 6 years, SY (or YSC) as he is also known, currently runs his label EWax out of this amazing city. SY has hosted label showcases all across Europe including Barcelona, Ibiza, Paris, Amsterdam and of course he is still running his long standing Watergate residency night in Berlin. Over the years he has had played at the likes of Fabric, D-EDGE, Sankeys, Space Ibiza, Hoppetosse, Parker Lewis, Tresor, Badaboum, Golzheim and many more. He has had releases on a number of quality labels including Rawax, META, Moan, Politics Of Dancing, Avotre and his own very own EWax imprint few for both is own productions plus remixes.
How long have you been djing and producing for:
Djing: To be honest, I’ve lost count, but it’s been a while! I’d say over 15 years now. With regards to the production side his came a lot later down the line. I’ve been producing music for approximately 3 and a half years. You could call me a late starter!
Where are you based:
Do you currently have any residencies in your home city:
I have a long standing residency with my label EWax at Watergate, Berlin. This year it’ll be 5 years since our very first party!
House with plenty of soul & groove
DJOKO is one of the most consistent and talented artists in recent times. Also my old friend Janeret has an incredible sound. – Sorry I know that’s two, but I couldn’t just pick one!
Nuances de Nuit. Everything they release is just amazing! Go check it out!
Carl Cox & Pete Tong (MBE) have been at the top of their game for as long as I can remember. If ANYONE needs inspiration to see where this industry can take you, then look no further than these guys.
Got to be Mohamed Salah. Yes I’m a Liverpool fan! Haha!
If you weren’t djing and producing what would you doing right now:
I would most likely still be residing in the UK, working a 9-5 office job. I consider myself lucky & very grateful to be living here in my beloved Berlin, whilst doing what I love.
What’s next for 2021:
Hopefully more opportunities to play music again and the chance to catch up with friends from near & far! I’m also very excited about my upcoming productions which are due throughout 2021, both via vinyl & digital.
Music Of The Month
‘Kreutziger’ – ‘Same Thoughts’ EP
EWax Editions (EWD09)
The EWax train keeps on rollin with yet another A Grade release which comes courtesy of Dutch duo ‘Kreutziger’.
The Kreutziger boys who are based in Amsterdam have been on steady incline over the last few years with releases on some heavyweight labels such as Madtech, Hatch, Doppel-Audio, Relikt. HedZup, Avotre, Inermu, and PIV.
The EP that’s on offer here entitled ‘Same Thoughts’ is drenched in quality from the off with all 4 tracks equally as strong as each other. If I had to pick a favourite then ‘Shake It’ would be my pick with its rolling bassline, great drums and cheeky vocal hook throughout. The track is crying out to be played on a big rig and I can’t wait to do just that.
Another one firmly in the bag for both the label and also the Kreutziger boys. Look forward to hearing more of the same soon.
Head to Beatport and grab yourself a copy!
Mix Of The Month
This month’s mix comes from San Fran’s main man, Sam Haskin, who has put this mix together especially for us here at Decoded.
For those that missed Sam’s ‘Early Dinner’ EP that came out last year on EWax Editions you can still get this at all the usual digital outlets.
Thanks for reading, ill see you next month.
