Patterns continues to add to Brighton’s incredible musical heritage

After opening in May 2015, 2016 marks the first full year Patterns in Brighton has been open and it’s been a big one. While already renowned for its consistently on point club programming, 2016 has seen Patterns quickly establish itself as the place to see the hottest new and touring bands, as well as electronica’s most exciting live acts. On the former site of an Art deco hotel and paying homage to the venue’s deeply ingrained music heritage (from Ted Potters Music Bar to The Escape Club to, of course, Audio) the sea facing venue was given a complete redesign before opening as Patterns.

It’s close enough to London to make a night out and getting home in the morning feasible but if you stick around the next day there are bottomless brunch offers in the afternoon where you can grab a hotdog and bottomless Prosecco or Bloody Mary’s for £17 and numerous other benefits to soak up in Brighton which beat scrapping for floor space in one of London’s parks or pubs the next day.

Among other highlights, 2016 has seen grime royalty Lady Leshurr bringing her infectious awesomeness to Patterns, stand out shows from Khruangbin, Hinds, Jagwar Ma, The Magic Gang and a performance from NYC’s enigmatic and influential NYC duo Silver Apples. Live acts still to come this year include the mysterious Ghanaian electronic/rap/highlife icon Ata Kak who joins Patterns on October 19th as part of the Awesome Tapes from Africa label showcase and Yusseff Kamaal – coming to Patterns on 12th November

With a hand built DJ booth upstairs, powered by a bespoke Ohm PA, the ground floor is a hangout of lush sound where you can knock back cocktails, craft beers and loaded hot dogs from The Dog Haus and enjoy a varied programme of music and culture events. Stripped right back to expose original features, the light-drenched ground floor is where monolithic mirrors meet with industrial concrete and green neon dances off wood panelling reminiscent of Twin Peaks, with music at the epicentre. Downstairs is designed purely for dancing in the dark, with sonic experience at the top of the agenda. After testing two of the world’s leading systems head-to-head in the space, Patterns opted for impeccable L’Acoustics sound system – a key component for live and DJ led acts alike.

2017 will see the introduction of a new ‘Curated By’ series, which will work on a series of quarterly Saturdays with Avalon Emerson (first date Saturday Jan 21st) and Bradley Zero (Starts Saturday March 4th), who will each host four nights a year, inviting guests artists that reflect their unique tastes. Patterns’ Winter Digital Art Installation (launching Nov 2017).

Treat your senses pre or post rave, as Patterns invites you to step into a digital forest this winter, created by Brighton based projection artist Thomas Buckley as an extended sequel to his two-day Digital Autumn project at The Brighton Dome during Brighton Digital Festival. The ground floor bar will be transformed into a winter wonderland reminiscent of scenes from The Chronicles of Narnia, brought to life by a multi-level digitally projected and interlinked forest. Basically, the perfect recovery spot to a big night out.

The programme for the last season of 2016 is possibly the most jam-packed unveiled yet, including Roman Flügel, Daniel Avery, Courtesy, Skream, Call Super, Objekt, Dasha Rush, Romare (Dj Set), Oneman, DJ Q, Maurice Fulton, Benji B, Julio Bashmore, Zenker Brothers, Kornel Kovacs, Leon Vynehall, The Black Madonna, Zero 7 (DJ set) and many more. On Dec 31st Patterns will be welcoming Midland back to the club to bring in the New Year, along with NYC’s Mike Servito, promising to be very suitable way to bring in 2017.
