Review by Andy Howarth
It wasn’t long ago that I was heaping praise on Piemonts last EP, and here I am once again ready to put the proverbial pen to paper to do so once more.
‘Definition’ is a chuggy moody lil’ Tech Houser with enough depth to serve as warm-up material, whilst also being pacey enough to carry you through the later hours of your set. The rolling bassline is helped along by the almost-tribal style percussion, and you know that DJs like Lawler et al will lap this up.
David Labeij takes the hazy road less travelled for his remix and serves up an encapsulating otherworldly rendition that I rather like. Both versions are a treat, but somehow I find myself strangely drawn to David’s deliciously dark take. Definitely one of those tracks that takes a while to get going, but in doing so it buries its way under your skin, and once its arrived there you won’t want it to leave. Ace stuff.
B-side ‘More Than Once’ is a typically polished number from the ‘mont, and although it’s extremely accomplished and beautifully put together, I have to be honest and say that I struggled to find anything particular to recommend about it. That said, it’s probably a case of personal taste, so i’m going to leave this one out there for you to decide, as there really isn’t anything inherently bad about it either.
Spencer K on the other hand has grabbed the bull by the horns and crafted a Tribal badass of a remix that’s right up my street. The rolling drums eventually make way for the reverbed gospel-style vox, which itself acts as a call to arms before the thundering beats come crashing back in. A brutal remix that rounds of yet another cracking EP from the ever-brilliant German duo.
