Portishead release Roseland NYC Live 25 – limited edition double-LP in solid red and Digipak CD

One of the most renowned and acclaimed live albums of all time, Portishead’s ‘Roseland  NYC Live 25’ celebrates the 25th anniversary of its original release in November 1998.

To be released on 26 April, this newly remastered version has an expanded tracklisting to include ‘Undenied’ and ‘Numb’ from the concert film, as well as the full-length performance of ‘Western Eyes’, which played in part over the credits of the film. ‘Sour Times’ and ‘Roads’ are also now the original Roseland versions (previously substituted on the album release with recordings from other performances).

This anniversary edition was originally released on streaming services on the actual day of the record anniversary (2 November), it is now being made available as a limited edition double-LP set on solid red vinyl with a gatefold sleeve, a double-sided fold-out poster and a recreation of the guest ‘backstage’ sticky pass used at the concert. There will also be a digipak CD including the venue guest ‘backstage’ sticky pass and a 12-page booklet. All iterations of this release contain the same tracklist.

Portishead’s Adrian Utley, who has overseen the full production of this reissue, said “I’ve always held the memory of this show which we played before our second album was released. This was the first time an audience had heard the new tunes and it was put together to launch that album. Great care was taken over the orchestration and look of the filming. It preceded a year-long World tour for us. Recorded and Filmed in the legendary Roseland Ballroom in New York which unfortunately doesn’t exist any more. This reissue has 3 tracks that were not released before and we’ve re-mastered all of them.”

Available directly from Portishead’s online store is ‘Live 1998 Sour Times / Road’, a limited edition 10” vinyl companion release. Presented on black vinyl in a black poly-lined inner bag it runs at 33 ⅓ RPM and is housed inside a minimalist single red sleeve with debossing on the cover.

This special edition release contains two live recordings which were part of the original 1998 Roseland NYC Live album tracklist but were not included in the new anniversary edition. ‘Sour Times’ was recorded live at The Warfield, San Francisco 1st April 1998 and ‘Roads’ was recorded live at Quart Festival, Kristiansand 3rd July 1998. On 26 April, Watershed Cinema in Bristol will be showing the Roseland NYC Live in full with an introduction from Adrian Utley. Tickets are available from here.

‘Roseland NYC Live’ was originally recorded and filmed at New York’s Roseland Ballroom with a 28-piece orchestra in 1997. A live album and concert film combined, it has sold over one million copies to date. The performance features tracks from their groundbreaking, Mercury Award-winning debut album ‘Dummy’ as well as tracks from their equally acclaimed self-titled second album.
