I’ve been a fan of dance music a really long time. Really long. So imagine for a moment, my emotional state on hearing I would be reviewing the new Joris Voorn Fabric mix a whole month before I would inevitably would be buying it anyway. If you’ve heard the Balance mix Joris did a few years ago, then you’ll very quickly realise I was literally jumping with joy. He has taken the concept of the mix album and digital DJing into exciting new realms, and frankly, NO-ONE is anywhere close to matching him. Weaving a unique tale with 65 tracks over 70 minutes is a talent in itself, but the sheer class and musicality which Joris brings to the fore is, for me, the thing which sets him apart from any other DJ out there at the moment.

“The creative freedom I have when working in Ableton allows me to edit, mix and remix tracks in ways you can’t do with turntables or CD players. Tracks are often used as building blocks in the form of loops and samples in order to create something completely new. Tracks are usually stripped down or minimal sounding to allow for layering and mixing with other tracks. The result is a mix that is more than the sum of its parts.” – Joris Voorn

Rather than merely string together the latest tracks in a bland thoughtless way, he has carefully selected classic cuts by techno royalty (and peers like Speedy J and Richie Hawtin as Plastikman) alongside brand new melodic techno cuts. Each track has a place; creates a feeling. As he says, the sum is greater than its parts. Building magnificently, and blurring the lines between ambient, deep house, progressive and techno, Joris takes us on a wild ride to wonderland. Not one to rock the boat, the transitions are silky smooth and each track feels like its only purpose was to sit next to the last. Because of the sheer volume of tracks used in the mix, its hard to really point out highlights, other than to say the mix as a whole is a fantastic journey. Much like a well programmed live mix, it has thrills and spills galore. One minute your grinning from ear to ear rocking out to a tough deep beat, the next Joris pulls you back with a delicate winsome vocal, before pummelling you in to submission.

Ultimately, this, like the Balance mix before it, will be the fuel for many many after parties the world over, and when the music is this good, you wonder why the party has to end at all!
