Rob Hes who has built himself a solid reputation as a techno stalwart, is back with Hernan Cattaneo’s imprint label. Rob now has had releases with Bedrock, Basmati and Sounds Of Earth knows and exactly what is needed from him to get signed to these big labels. He simply dots the I’s and crosses the T’s with his craftsmanship… Fellow producers.. If your gonna make techno, it has to have energy. All 3 tracks have.
His solo track on this E.P is amazing. Its the percussion in the mid and top end frequencies that give this track the energy. The base line gives it the the groove and the little incidentals that drop in and out push you along. You also have the synths that run along with the track that open and close at any given time and give this the movement it needs. Perfect.
His colab with Steve Slight has a completely different feel which emphasises the quality of this label and keeps everything interesting. I can imagine this track getting support from the likes of Seth Troxler to John Digweed. The tracks all about the synth and all though the percussion doesn’t have the same amount of energy as the previous track, it still rolls along nicely. The synth and keys played will give you an euphoric feeling. This could easily be a closing track.
Last but not least is ‘Speechless’ by Rob and Oliver Weiter. Again I can imagine dj’s like Sasha and Dixon all getting involved with this. It certainly has a slight German feel to it. Its simple but theres enough to keep you rocking. The base and the synth play the same notes and the percussion is quite housey. Just when you need something more along comes a nice arpeggio. Once your in the breakdown you have a lovely synth and some twisted keys and bleeps to keep you smiling.
This is the standard that house and techno should be or at least aiming for.
