Review: Secluded meets Broom with an old school edge.

Genre: Techno

Secluded is a moniker of Glaswegian based artist Stephen Gorrie. He is more commonly known in the techno world Hans Bouffmyhre and the label boss of Sleaze records. Secluded productions move towards another side of his persona. It is a project which he has developed over the last few years and as a result, a live show has come to fruition. On remix duties is Mark Broom, who status within the techno scene in the UK spans over twenty years.

The original track provides a tough but funkier low end than previous releases and is something I definitely was not expecting. It has a housier feel to it from the get-go and continues in that vein as some retro synth stabs begin to be introduced coupled with a nice intermittent uplifting female vocal.

As the track progresses, there is a very old school vibe off of it and continues in that fashion maintaining a fast but funky groove throughout. The introduction of horn like pad weaves in and out and leads us to a nice uplifting build up with some heavy reverbs and delays. As we move towards the business end of this track the old school Detroit synth is really driving this along in conjunction with a funky heavy low end. It is something which works very well in delivering a peak time floor filler.

On the ‘B’ side, Broom takes on the original with a different perceptive. A more weighted kick drum is prominent against the bass. He integrates a chopped edit of the  vocal, working in between a tuned up version of the old school riff from the original. Both run in tandem as the build develops and when it breaks, some 909 hats introduced to keep the groove flowing and evolving. Overall a nice rework and a nice balance of keeping the key elements of the ‘A’ side but add a different flavour overall.

‘Free Your Mind’ is out now and on digital format only.
