Semantica Records just released Articulated Lair. SEMANTICA 196 by Various Artists

Madrid’s Semantica Records has long operated at the darker end of the underground spectrum, and their 196th catalogue entry makes no concessions to accessibility. Articulated Lair is a ten-track compilation that draws together a deliberately international cast of artists, each contributing something to the label’s ongoing conversation between techno, dub, and electronica.

The opening salvo belongs to Biorc, whose “Duct” sets the tone with seven and a half minutes of controlled tension and industrial warmth. Ana Alves follows with “Vehemencia”, a track that pulses with a brooding, purposeful energy, while Mesh Convergence’s “Cultura del Loop” does exactly what the title promises, weaving hypnotic rhythm patterns with quiet confidence.

Ellissir and RVDMNTL hold the mid-section steady. The former’s “La Puerta Negra” has a spectral quality, all shadowed movement and textured atmosphere, while the latter brings a more rhythmically driven sensibility to “El Romero Cabecea”. Mohamad Kafarsoussa’s “Gravity in Glass” is brief but immersive, and Filip Xavi’s “Close Encounter” stretches out into genuinely cinematic territory.

The closing third rounds things off with characteristic depth. Irazu’s “Tierras Audaces”, Ruman’s “On Shades” and Jero Clares’ “Astral Collision” each bring their own particular shade of darkness, the latter providing a fittingly expansive finish to a collection that rewards patient listening.

Mastered by Carlos Koschitzky at his Gijón studio, the whole thing sits together cohesively without ever feeling formulaic. Semantica compilations tend to work as documents of where the underground is at a given moment, and Articulated Lair is no different. Available now on Bandcamp in high-quality digital formats.
