Fred Monk and Sir Rizio make for an unlikely pairing on paper, which gives Bilocular an interest that precedes the first listen. Released on Seven Villas Music, the three-track EP finds the two producers working across the intersection of deep house and dub techno, a space the label has long understood well.
The music is built on restraint. Grooves are deep without being demonstrative, atmospheres develop gradually, and the minimalist textures that run through each track feel considered rather than incidental. There is a shared sensibility at work here that reads as genuine rather than convenient.
The EP’s title points to something dual, something existing in two chambers at once, and that idea carries through the music itself. The productions sit comfortably in a late-night listening context and would translate equally well to a dancefloor. Rather than treating those two states as contradictions, Monk and Sir Rizio present them as extensions of the same impulse.
Seven Villas has built its catalogue on this kind of low-ego electronic music, and Bilocular fits the label’s sensibility without simply repeating it. Three tracks, a clear concept, and enough sonic detail to reward repeated listening.
