Internationally renowned Glasgow based electronic record label Soma Records are delighted to be hosting Soma Skool 2021 virtually for the first time. An annual education event catering to anyone who is interested in a career in the electronic music industry, Soma Skool has established itself as Scotland’s premier electronic music conference.
After two successful years at SWG3, this year Soma are taking things online with masterclasses and panels from some of the industry’s most respected international artists and professionals.
On each day there will be 1 panel and 2 masterclasses, both streamed live, meaning attendees can learn in real time and ask their favourite artists and industry professionals questions directly – all from the comfort of their own home.
Saturday 27th February
From 1.30-2.30pm GMT, panel ‘COVID and the Future of the Electronic Music Industry’ will be taking place. This panel will be discussing the effects of the pandemic on different sectors of the industry and what the future holds for it. Panellists include Glasgow DJ duo and techno icons Slam, London nightclub fabric promotions manager Judy Griffith, rising DJ star of the European techno scene Cera Khin and more TBA, hosted by music journalist Marcus Barnes.
From 2.45-4pm there will be an electronic music production masterclass from world famous DJ, Producer and Soma Records artist Rebekah. ‘Creating Outside The Box’ will be based around how she approaches her creative side of her track production. Definitely not one to be missed for all budding techno producers! (Hosted by Subsine Academy Ableton Certified instructor, Simon Stokes)
From 4.15-5.15pm global electronic music equipment and software giants Pioneer DJ will be hosting a masterclass in their latest DJ equipment. In this session Pioneer DJ’s Sam Shepherd will be discussing the new and innovative features of the CDJ-3000 and DJM-V10 mixer. This will be followed by an exclusive interview with DJ + Producer Nightwave around her experiences with these latest releases, with interviewer Steven Galloni from SKapade Studios.
Sunday 28th February
From 1.30-2.30pm GMT, there will be panel focusing on ‘Clubs, creatives, communities and mental health’ curated by Clubber2Clubber, a non-profit organisation promoting wellbeing in the clubbing community. The discussion will be about mental health within club and creative communities – how we can use our own resources and networks to fight for positive mental health and how we can reduce harm in our club and creative environments.
The panellists include Scottish rapper, author, Social commentator and BAFTA nominated film maker Loki aka Darren McGarvey; Juliette Duffy, founder of psychological artistic magazine Pysche ; Raihan from London based QTIBPOC sober event misery; and Scottish harm reduction charity Crew.
From 2.45-4pm Soma Records Petrichor, will be hosting his own Ableton masterclass based around production tips and tricks from the making of his most recent Soma album ‘Narisshu’. The masterclass will also include a free download of Subsine Studio’s Ableton Live production course, for those attending!
To end the event, from 4.15-5.30pm UK based DJ, producer and dancefloor destroyer Manni Dee will be hosting a masterclass based around a breakdown of one of his own fast paced techno tracks. (Hosted by Subsine Academy Ableton Certified instructor, Simon Stokes)
To top the event off, Soma Records are also giving ticket holders the chance to have their tracks receive feedback from the Soma A+R team!
