South London’s perpetually exciting Studio 338 is celebrating a brilliant year of parties, exclusives, rare headliners and wildly colourful outdoor parties with a wonderful Winter programme and some seasonal decor updates. They’ve also announced the running order for New Year’s Day, hosted by the inimitable Art of Dark collective.
The club, which of course boasts various different rooms and a fully-covered and heated outdoor terrace that rivals any in Europe, will have a giant Christmas tree erected for the festive season. It will be one of the many features of a very modern Winter makeover, that also proffers a central DJ booth complete 3D mapping to bring the whole place alive with projections. The booth will be adorned with magical 3D baubles, piles of presents, giant light-up stars, all to add to that festive feel. Snow machines will add the icing on the Christmas cake, and are sure to really add an extra sense of party spirit to each event.
Events kick off with the highly anticipated return of Elrow. Famous for their carnival-like explosion of colours and characters, Elrow are back with the El Bronx Rowshow on December 12th. Selling out in six days without even announcing a headliner, the last event saw Jackmaster, Eats Everything and Jasper James all take to the decks unannounced, so be sure to expect guests of an identical calibre.
On December 18th the Idiot Savant crew take over with a residents and extended family get-together namked Flowerworks Carnival, with B.A.R.E TASTY serving up Afro-Mediterranean goodness until 11pm. Then onto Boxing Day, Regression Sessions return with their signature hedonistic ways – expect an exceptional house/techno/DnB soundtrack plus bouncy castles, ball pits and other shenanigans.
Abode is one of the most talked about daytime London parties of them all. Already sold out, December 27th rounds out a stellar year for the crew and sees the much-loved underground night spend thousands on special production. With such great music and a peerless attention to detail, it’s easy to see why Abode is at the top.
New Year’s Eve sees the welcome return of Viva Warriors. Whenever this scene-leading crew are in town the events are roadblocks that seem to only get better and better. This one is extra-special – as you would expect for such an occasion – and as well as tech house king and label boss Steve Lawler, many stars join the fun. First of those is the now solo project that is Art Department aka Jonny White, who also runs No.19 Music. The Canadian has set trends for years now with his ghoulish tech sound, has played events like Burning Man and BPM and has turned out two full-lengths as well as a mix CD for Fabric. He is a truly global star of the underground world.
Then comes notorious party boy Skream, a dubstep hit-making machine turned diverse house and tech DJ, who has released on Crosstown Rebels. Having played all over the world with Magnetic Man, he knows how to work any crowd and isn’t afraid to take risks. Joining him is the American Hot Creations co-founder Lee Foss, known for his creamy house tunes and floor-filling DJ sets everywhere from WMC to Fabric and back again. Viva regulars Detlef and Anek also join in, as does one of the fastest-rising stars of recent times in Patrick Topping. His infectious tech has come on Hot Creations and Truesoul and he is a DJ who manages to inject floors with real energy
Finally, New Year’s Day starts off 2016 with a real touch of class, as Art of Dark continue to champion the coolest minimal techno cats from across the board. The line-up (featuring extended sets in true Art of Dark style) includes Zip, Onur Özer b2b Binh (under their Treatment guise), Francesco del Garda and resident Colin Chiddle.
As ever there’s lots going on at Studio 338, which is now truly well deserving of its reputation as London’s most ambitious venue.
