TERRAFORMA announces new names with Jeff Mills, Lanark Artefax, Powder, Vladimir Ivkovic, Batu & more

Terraforma, the international music festival dedicated to artistic experimentation and environmental sustainability, presents its fifth edition which will take place from June 29th to July 1st 2018 in its usual location on the grounds of the beautiful Villa Arconati just outside of Milan. For it’s fifth edition, Terraforma takes on the unknown, with a theme of cosmic space, the artists selected to perform, the artwork, and the new stage structures built this year all embody other worldly characteristics.

Terraforma calls one of the greatest explorers of life outside of our planet, through sounds to join us on this journey: Jeff Mills. As the author of a symphonic work dedicated to the celestial world, Lost In Space, who has produced the soundtrack for A Trip to the Moon, he conceptualized “Mono,” a monolithic sculpture and installation inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and very recently launched a radio program The Outer Limits in collaboration with NASA, where he investigates intergalactic theories, parallel realities and the complexity of time and space, he is the perfect protagonist to Terraforma’s cosmic theme for 2018.

Following in parallel, Lanark Artefax, a Glaswegian immersed in sci-fi imagery and praised by Aphex Twin and Björk; the DJ and producer Powder from Tokyo who transforms into sublime dance floor compositions; the mysterious PLO Man who’s mission is to hypnotize with house, ambient and jungle tracks, offering listeners a state of mental and spatial reassurance; the co-founder of raster-noton Olaf Bender aka Byetone, presents his latest audiovisual live Universal Music; Konrad Sprenger, who has released on Bill Kouligas’ PAN, develops rhythmic patterns based on algorithms and customized instruments, such as a multi-channel electric guitar controlled by the computer that can play like a complete orchestra. Additionally, as with every edition of the festival, Paquita Gordon and Rabih Beaini return with their deep, unpredictable and “free” vibrations, the latter opening Sunday with the “heavy” task of reawakening the spirits of the night in the right mood. Also on Sunday, Vladimir Ivkovic will present us the unique gift of his best selection of hidden musical gems; and Valentino Mora, creator of lush sessions with deep meditative grooves and dub excursions that stimulate body and mind, while the young Batu embodies the latest innovative wave of Bristol music, joining the UK bass perfection polyrhythmic techno with detailed textures.

Previously announced acts include the legendary Plaid (Warp Records) & Felix’s Machines is an extraordinary show combining handmade audio-visual sculptures with synchronised hypnotic patterns of light and movement; the prodigious Iranian percussionist Mohammad Reza Mortazavi who is said to have “the fastest fingers in the world,” when he plays the tombak and recently released an EP with Bernd Friedmann; DJ and producer Nkisi, the spokeswoman for the diaspora of African artists through her collective NON Worldwide, her rhythms are inspired by her Afro roots yet hold notes of punk and gabber; the Imaginary Softwoods project of John Elliott (of Emeralds and founder of Spectrum Spools) favours contemplative atmospheres and ambient synthesizers; the ethnomusicologist Florian Meyer aka Don’t DJ pushes the listener out of conventional perceptual barriers by challenging the complexity of algorithmic sounds; and last but not least, the man behind last years acclaimed surprise closing set, Donato Dozzy confirms to be one of the protagonists of Terraforma thanks to his unprecedented vision of electronic music.
