The Enduring Legacy of Fatima Yamaha’s “What’s A Girl To Do”

Few electronic tracks have enjoyed the enduring resonance of ‘What’s A Girl To Do’ by Fatima Yamaha. For over two decades, it has echoed through clubs around the globe, subtly evolving from a cult favorite into an undisputed classic.

Originally released as the debut EP on Magnetron Music—with support from Ireland’s D1 Recordings—the track’s early journey was anything but meteoric. It simmered gently beneath the radar, building a quiet but devoted following. Despite its growing allure, What’s a Girl To Do remained largely out of reach for wider audiences—until 2015, when Magnetron Music teamed up with the esteemed Dekmantel Records for a re-release.

The collaboration finally gave the track the platform it deserved. The reissue didn’t just reignite interest; it solidified its place in the electronic canon, earning the coveted #1 spot on Resident Advisor’s Track of the Year list and introducing Fatima Yamaha’s hypnotic sound to a generation that had missed its initial glow.

With popularity came imitation: a wave of unofficial remixes, bootlegs, and reinterpretations flooded online platforms. Unfortunately, many fell short—adding overcooked stabs, incongruent samples, or simply missing the understated magic of the original.

The moment has finally arrived, for the first time ever, a carefully curated set of official remixes has been unveiled, all helmed by a new generation of Dutch talent and revered pioneers alike.

JAEL’s remix injects his distinctive high energy flair synonymous with both the artist’s production and sets. The peak time club roller features the distorted vocal embedded within faster garage grooves and joyful drops. The artist is in good company on this anticipated remix drop, amongst the likes of KI/KI, Identified Patient, Upsammy and more.
