Joseph Thomas Prince aka. Third Son is the man who has two older brothers, one record label, and an infinite thirst for exploring the intersection between ambient music and techno. Hailing from London and being forced to part take in classical piano lessons in his adolescents (something he would thank his parents for later in life), Third Son sounds like the sonic amalgamation of his influences which include Amon Tobin and Radiohead – but shifted into a dirtier tech house context.
Despite his first official release ‘Dopamine’ dropping a mere 4 years ago, Third Son has appeared on notable record labels Sincopat, Sodai, and Kneaded Pains. His music is always executed perfectly while still honing in on his ability to transport this into an interesting and emotionally moving live context. Whether it be original or remixes, his productions are always laden with rich vintage synthesisers from his impressive studio collection. Third Son is returning to Australia this summer, hot off the tail of collaborating with Stereo MC’s on his latest single ‘Assimo’ released on Skint Records. Catch him live at one of the 4 upcoming Aussie dates.
Third Son’s goal has always been simple – to make the best music he can. Coming from a musical family and trained as a musician from a young age, his innate passion for music has taken him through styles and experimentation the world over. In the first three years since conception Third Son has swiftly become a globally recognised artist, revered for his laser-precision DJ sets and his broad musical range, coupling deep and hypnotic melodies with four to the floor techno and the occasional breakbeat.
His father, himself a professor of music, made sure Joseph was trained classically in the art from a young age. His youth interests took him from jazz to rock and further but it was Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ that was the real rite of passage, with its blurring of electronica and rock shaping something of a revelation for him.
With a hefty number of releases under his belt and support from some of the industry’s key players, he has broken more ground than most in such a short time. Now he looks to develop his skills further, with a live set of his own material and a series of ambient works he is piquing ever more interest from his fans and garnering him new ones alike. Whether it is in the studio or on stage, Third son’s goal is simple: to make the best music he can.
