10 DJ questions to Hypnotised
What was your first ever record?
When we leave my children’s records aside my first records were from Michael Jackson and Madonna. If we talk about my first “electronic” record ever it’s quite a funny story. I was about 10 or 11 years old I think, and at the fair in our village I won a record. Apparently it was a record of Front 242, never heard of them before being such a young boy. The man who worked at the fair was very enthusiastic, “this Belgian band is so big in USA”… I was so disappointed when I got home and listened to the record, what the hell was all this noise?! A few years later I turned out to be such a big fan of them and this record has still a very special place in my vinyl collection. If we talk about buying my first ever electronic records first names I come up with are Laurent Garnier, The Source Experience (Robert Leiner) and Emmanuel Top. Especially the “Different Journeys” album of The Source Experience on the legendary Ghent based R&S label dragged me into such a new and amazing underground world that my soul was sold for life.
Who were your Heroes and Influences growing up?
If we talk about music you experience so much different phases in life. First it starts with the obvious stars like Michael Jackson, Madonna, … When I grew up as a teenager there was the grunge period with all the Seattle bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana and we were also into the new wave bands like The Cure and the Sisters of Mercy. Other bands who will stay all time favourites are Depeche Mode, R.E.M., The Dream Syndicate, Placebo, Johnny Cash, … Also when discovering the underground electronic scene there were different phases. I experienced the boom of techno with legendary parties as I love techno when it was still very underground. In Belgium we were very spoiled cause every week we had all the big techno dj’s playing here like Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Carl Cox… Then I had an acid techno phase with a lot of squat parties where we listened a lot to Emmanuel top, Acid Junkies, … And then there was progressive uptil now with some slices of deephouse and minimal.
Which came first DJing or Producing?
Like most DJ’ing. Back in the days producing wasn’t so important as it is now. Make one cheesy hit these days and you travel the world. Even though I always stayed in the scene I quit dj’ing for a very long time, only started back with it in 2012. One of my best decisions ever cause I’m having so much fun with it again, with my radio show, guestmixes, gigs, … And there is so much good music again these days. I never really started producing in a proper way, except for the bit of experimenting. So this is definitely something on the nearby agenda to start with.
Whats the story behind this mix?
I like my sounds deep, mysterious and dark. So this is what you will hear in this mix too. Get hypnotised!
Whats the home studio set up like?
Still have my two turntables and my mixer to play my old vinyls. For the new stuff I have a Macbook Pro, Traktor Kontrol S2, Traktor Pro 2 and Ableton 9. And a Harmon/Kardon soundsystem.
Any future plans you would like to share?
My life has changed completely since I met my wonderful future wife Madeleine. So in September I will be moving to South Africa to live with my new family. Hope to explore the scene overthere, finally put some work into producing and keep on working on my weekly radioshow and some guestmixes.
Whats your take on the Analogue vs Digital debate?
Most redundant and ridiculous debate ever. Now it’s a debate about digital, before it was a debate about cd’s. I mean, our scene has always been about freedom and respect and now a minority find it necessary to start discussions. About what? About progression? But this same minority has the newest smartphone, they drive to their location with their gps, they have a nice laptop… The people on the dancefloor, the listeners of your radioshow or your sets online they all just want one thing: a good set.
Are there any producers/labels you always go to for new material?
Of course I have a whole list of usual suspects whose tracks I always play. I could name a few but then I would do harm to those I don’t mention. If you have a look at my tracklists you will see several names appear regularly.
What makes them special to you?
They don’t just make tracks like dime a dozen. They take you somewhere with their sounds just like I try to do with my sets.
Whats your dream DJ gig?
When you have the whole crowd with you that’s the most amazing, and then the venue doesn’t even matter.
