Irish producer Hybrasil has enjoyed a pretty stellar 2018. As if moving from Dublin to Berlin wasn’t enough to take on, he also released a string of well-received records on his own Hybrasil label as well as on Gregor Tresher’s Break New Soil. Throw in defining gigs in Ibiza at Amnesia and at ADE where he was a guest of Michel De Hey(as well as some big gigs at home) and it really had been a 12 months to remember. Which is why we got in touch with him for a Tour Diary of course! We’ll let Will take it from here…
District 8 Stage @ Life Festival – 26/05/18
Earlier in the year I took some time out to update my live set, I moved from using a laptop and a 909 Drum Machine to working solely on an Octatrack and one or two new machines, it was a period of learning and development. So my Tour season properly kicked off in May at Ireland’s Life Festival at the amazing grounds of Belvedere House. I performed on the District 8 Stage with Amelie Lens, Alan Fitzpatrick, Adam Beyer & Joseph Capriati.
My first trip to Life Festival was back in 2012, a group of us went down from Temple Lane Studios and I was running some Maschine Master classes down there. I have done numerous live radio broadcasts from the Festival over the years but this was my first stage show for them. It was a really nice experience, the crowd were really good, great energy and the stage production was really on point. I unleashed a lot of new music for the first time, so coupled with using the Octatrack, a lot of things were new for that show. I was really happy with it.
One Night Stand @ Amnesia Terrace – 03/07/18
I was invited by the Game Over team to be part of their One Night Stand lineups this season. I played on the Amnesia Terrace with Carl Cox & Adam Beyer, it was an incredible experience. My first trip to Ibiza was 10 years almost to the week. Back then I went to Cocoon Mondays at Amnesia religiously. I moved to Ibiza last Season (2017) and I also went to Cocoon religiously every Monday so playing on the Terrace this season was a dream.
When I moved to Ibiza last season the Game Over team really took me in, I had an amazing summer. Returning this year for their One Night Stand shows was really special, I was really grateful for everyone’s support. I put an incredible amount of work into this performance, I was really well prepared for it. Once the set began all nerves settled and I began to really enjoy the experience. There were a couple of moments where time stood still, I took a moment to take in the production, the lighting, the dancefloor and be present.
There was a lot going on around this party, we left Dublin on July 1st for Ibiza and moved to Berlin direct from there. I was carrying what I could from my studio and a suitcase full of clothes. We were unsure but excited about what lay ahead.
The Bus @ Paradiso Amsterdam – 14/07/18
A former church, Paradiso is an iconic venue in the heart of Amsterdam that has been at the centre of Amsterdam nightlife for the past 40 years, as a venue, club and cultural centre. It has seen the likes of David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Prince perform there. So right from the off I was psyched to be part of this show.
I first met Debra Mitchell, the promoter behind ‘The Bus’ playing a show in a small Amsterdam venue during ADE many years ago. I have known Gino Lightner who was on the line up with me many years also. So this gig felt like I was playing with old friends. Gino’s performance was incredible, he really is one of Amsterdam’s truly great DJs.
I really enjoyed this show, hospitality was amazing and everyone was super friendly. I caught up with some friends at the show too, we hung out, the crowd was great. It was a really late night so I really suffered on that plane home!
Hito Presents OTO @ IPSE Berlin – 26/07/2018
My show in Berlin was with my good friend Hito at IPSE. I was literally on the ground in Berlin 2 days after moving here and Hito called me up and invited me to play at her OTO (Japanese for Music) party. OTO is driven by Richie Hawtin’s Model 1 mixer, I have to say I was really psyched to get to perform on this in a club setting. I had used it at Flamingo studios in Ibiza a couple of years back, but this was my first time putting it to the test in a club environment.
IPSE is a super nice venue on the spree in Berlin, we had an amazing pre show meal at their restaurant which by the way is amazing, check it out. The gig itself was amazing, the club and the crowd was awesome. The sound in there was really good in there and the club was super professional to work with. It was a really nice experience from start to finish.
The Woods @ Electric Picnic Festival – 30/08/2018
This year has been a year of closing old cycles, 10 years ago I went to Ibiza for the first time, came back and handed in my notice at my job. One of the last things I did before leaving that company was disappear one weekend to Electric Picnic Festival, it was a last minute decision, all my friends were down there, I hadn’t gotten the time off on the Monday but I went anyway. It was an incredibly funny weekend; the end of an old life and the beginning of another.
For 10 years my head was in studios, promoting parties and developing my skills as a producer and live performer. Apart from Time Warp, ADE and Sonar, going to festivals and getting lost in the music for a weekend wasn’t really an option for me. So, my first time returning to Electric Picnic was 10 years later for this show and the guys behind District 8 and Life Festival asked me to close the Woods stage
Every other stage at the festival closed just before I started, we were the only one open. I was playing to around 13,000 people, my biggest audience yet. Once the first kick drum rolled out the rest of the set just flowed. It was amazing. The crowd were incredible, as Irish crowds always are. I also had the opportunity to hang out with friends before and afterwards which really made the trip for me. It was a really nice feeling leaving the site, I felt like I had completed a journey, ready for the next.
Pyramid X Game Over @ Amnesia Ibiza – 17/09/2018
My second show at Amnesia this season was in the main room with Len Faki & Sam Paganini. It was good, real good. It was my first time playing in the main room, I had spent a lot of time last season knocking around the club and watching friends performing in this booth, so it was really nice to be at the controls in there. I found the sound to be solid, the tech team there were amazing so everything was super easy in terms of set up.
My overall experience was fantastic. I did my first live broadcast on PURE Ibiza Radio beforehand, we were driving around the island in a convertible for the day, it was real Ibiza stuff. It was another chance to catch up with the Game Over team again which is always a really good laugh. Overall it was a great day and night.
Michel De Hey X Game Over @ Thuishaven ADE – 20/10/2018
This was my third show for Game Over on my Tour. I was invited to close the Michel De Hey X Game Over stage at Thuishaven during ADE. It was a stunning line up throughout the day and night including Luigi Madonna, Smythy, Kevin Saunderson, Steve Rachmad, Sub Ann and the show sold out well in advance.
I have been travelling to ADE every year since 2006 and this was my biggest show to date. This year I had a really nice time at ADE, my week was centred around going to panels and talks more so than the clubs (still managed to fit a few in though!). The Thuishaven show finished off my week really nicely. A group of us went in from Ibiza and Amsterdam, we were all made feel really welcome, everyone was really well looked after. I really couldn’t have asked for more from the organisers, they were great to deal with leading up to the show and as always the Amsterdam crowd was amazing.
