Trevor O’Neil is one of those unsung heroes of Ibiza that many don’t ever get to hear about. Being born in the worlds capital for bass, Bristol, its no surprise he pulls influence from drum n bass, break beat and hip hop. On top of that his affection for the Balearic sounds of the 90’s have seen him create his unique brand of tech house. Since his move to Ibiza, he has released on labels such as Seamless Recordings, Manchester Underground Music, What Happens, 1980 recordings and Soul Shift Music. His talent in the studio and his knack for reading crowds and smashing dance floors has not gone unnoticed, and has appeared in top venues such as Space, BoooM, Savannahs, Culture Box (Copenhagen) and many more. We caught up with him in Ibiza ahead of his release with Tim Andresens What Happens 100th release to talk about his involvement with the label, his career in Ibiza and he also offers some advice for troublesome holiday makers!
Hi Trevor, Pleasure to meet you, hows your day been so far?
Hi Simon, Great to meet you too! Thanks for getting me involved. Today for me has been about trying to find internet! Thankfully my mate has some lying around so i’ve come to his to do a few bits and pieces but once I’ve finished up here I’m back to the studio.
For those that maybe haven’t see you play, how would you describe your sound?
Deep, gritty tech house on a trip!
Tell us about your involvement with What Happens. How did you come to work with Tim?
Tim got in touch with me after hearing my first release on Seamless Recordings and said to send him demos. I made a few tracks up and he released my first ever EP. I also had the pleasure of playing his night at Culture Box in Copenhagen, so for those things I am eternally grateful. Since then he has come to Ibiza and we did a nights together and he’s always one of the first to get my music.
You also have a track on the 100th release? Can you talk us through its development?
If I remember correctly I made it during the summer at some point. I wanted to make something with bleepy percussion and just lay it over some rolling bass. After that its just let the imagination do its thing.
How long do originals normally take you to make? Is it a fluid process?
Normally about a week or so. I only really tend to work on one track at a time. I only go back to them for slight mixdown and arrangement changes after testing them out.
You live in Ibiza all year round. How does the island feel out of season, and are there still things to do?
I love the winter, as any resident here will tell you! It’s still warm and and there is more time to see your mates. There are still parties that run. I’ve done a few gigs here recently with Seamless Recordings at Pacha and Pikes Hotel. There is always some little thing going on somewhere on this island.
What made you choose to move originally, and do you have any regrets?
I chose to move here because my sense of adventure made me do it! I still tell it off for not getting me here sooner!!
Hahaha, you get to play in some of the worlds best clubs all year round. Where stands out for you, and why?
Space will always hold a special place in my heart because its Space, and every cliche you ever heard about it is true. Small intimate places really do it for me too, boat parties and the smash out at Hostal Salinas in October are personal favorites.
Each year Ibiza is besieged by Brit holidaymakers out for a good time. What advice would you give them to make their holiday more pleasurable?
Stay out of the West End and always go somewhere new on the island. Don’t be a dick.
EDM is big business still in the US, but do you see any signs of it on Ibiza?
Yes of course! its big business here too. I can’t say I’m too happy about Paris Hilton and co playing here but it is what it is. The thing is people still go and watch them, until they decide to stop being brainwashed or their music tastes change, then I think it will continue to grow for the time being……..unfortunately for some.
Finally, how does 2015 look for you with gigs and releases?
Obviously the track out on What Happens. I’ve already had a remix for Chiqito out on LoonyDoGGz records and I have an EP with them coming out soon. Also EP’s coming out on Manchester Underground Music and Seamless Recordings. Gig wise there should be more things at Space with the LuckyLife crew and whatever Seamless are up to. Always a few boat parties to look forward to as well!
