As is so often the case with drops on the Balkan Vinyl label, Unitary Covert Sonic Procedures II is an EP which fronts an array of top-quality acidic club productions. Here we find two tracks by Balkan bosses Posthuman bookended by a further pair of cuts from veteran Luke Vibert. No matter who’s in the driving seat here, you can be sure that everything on Unitary Covert Sonic Procedures II is a DJ-ready belter which draws heavily from classic rave sonics.
Vibert’s jams combine Detroit electro stylings with the kind of playful production choices which have characterised so much of his music down the years. EP opener ‘Batter Bits’ is all snappy breaks and junglist chordal stabs while closing cut ‘Trouble’ combines wailing, alarm-like synths with humming low-ends and a variety of vocal samples in its breakdown.
As for Posthuman’s tracks, ‘2 Jack 4 U’ delivers on its title with a jacking house groove. While ‘2 Jack 4 U’ maintains a steady pulse throughout, the duo’s other offering ‘Hidden Blade’ is the fastest jam here – this kinetic combo of juke drums, acidic low-ends and machine-funk synthesisers comes off like an alien rave beamed in from the deepest corner of space.
The second instalment in Balkan Vinyl’s Unitary Covert Sonic Procedures series finds label bosses Posthuman teaming up with the evergreen Luke Vibert in order to deliver a split EP of acid-fried rave productions.
