Review by Ian French

GEM033 has been expertly crafted by Kassey Voorn. The Athens based producer is no stranger to Gem as he delivered a superb remix for SQL’s Reveal in 2013. Now Kassey returns to Gem with an EP and SQL returns the favour with a remix of his own.

Kassey Voorn’s original shows off the skills of a producer known for his emotionally loaded music. The kick is deep with a silky soft click, the bassline energetic and powerful. Melodies percussion and high hats are all poured into a perfectly crafted stereo image and the whole package just works beautifully. But clever as the production is, Search and Destroy has such a raw and euphoric edge to it that you find yourself loosing yourself and diving deep into the music. The track has no long breaks to it, just a repetitive hypnotising groove and a lead synth that filters in and out creating ecstatic peaks throughout. Superb track!

SQL’s interpretation has one of the biggest warmest rolling basslines I have encountered in a long time! During the break it’s the melody that screeches its way into the foreground but as soon as the kick returns it’s the bassline that becomes the main element again. Another example of expert craftsmanship and a vital festival and main room track. Superb remix from a producer that is certainly one to watch.

My preferred choice here would be the remix by SQL but both tracks will do the job nicely, on any dance floor. Go and buy this as soon as you can and you will not be disappointed.
