Living in Berlin has its advantages. For Irish ex-pat Michael Lovatt it means continuing to produce the music he so dearly loves. Inspired by 80s electro pop, he has been experimenting with electronic sounds since he bought his first sampler as a teenager in his native Ireland. Fast forward 15 years and he has DJed across Europe and had multiple releases on a number of high profile labels with support from artists as disparate as Jose Padilla (Cafe Del Mar) to Tensnake and Laurent Garnier.
Top Down, his new release, is very much the culmination of all those years beavering away in the studio. The original starts with an African percussion loop and instantly reminded me of techno classic Filterheadz – Sunshine. It slowly develops into a low slung stab led groove monster; the sort of track you would find in a good Ibizan warm up set or as a perfect accompaniment to the sunset at Savannah. Clever use of light and dark in the front half of the track allows the groove to just be, never getting tired or repetative. Its the addition of the bass in the second part of the track with more clever drops and sound effects that add drama and excitement.
First of the remixers Arara takes the original and gives it a hefty kick up the behind! The resultant groove is much more suited to those late night jams from a Roger Sanchez style set and sit better with todays dance floors. Dee Brown the second remixer heads in a more UKG direction and will no doubt appeal to the Jaime Jones fans among you. All in all a decent package with some useful remixes which will suit a cross section of house DJs.
