Origins Sound – Detroit Cuts EP

There are no prises for guessing the stylistic direction of Swiss label Definition: Music’s next release: entitled Detroit Cuts, the EP comes from Origins Sound, a fast emerging British duo. Across three bulky tracks they lay out their no nonsense house vision and serve up muscular beats with a well sampled sense of house history imbued deep within.

The title track is first and pairs blocky beats, scraping percussive samples with stabs of a female vocal that brings with it a subtle hint of soul amongst the darker, tougher sound all around. Black is a little more skippy in its design, with bulbous basslines breaking out of the groove as chopped vocals and jazzy chords all link together up top. Finally, Amery is pitched somewhere between the too – its sure is a driven, functional track that will get people dancing, but its has some nice bassline work that is warm and supple and works on the heart as much as the heel. Proper house for proper DJs, then!

A house music veteran, growing up with the sound before it was even called ‘house music’. A successful DJ and producer in his own right, an ex-label and record shop owner. It’s safe to say house and techno music has been a large part of James’ life for longer than most of today’s clubbers have been alive. Despite being a self-confessed ‘underground monkey’ James appreciates the adage ‘house is a feeling’, and that the scene is all about bringing people together no matter what sound you’re in to."
